PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Winning six of the 10 bouts, the girls wrestling team at Wyoming Seminary defeated a talented USA All-Star team, 25-15 in freestyle wrestling, as part of the NCAA Fan Festival at the Convention Center on Saturday. It was held between sessions of the NCAA Div. I Championships, a big showcase of the sport.

Overall, there were nine different states represented between the two teams, and all of the competitors are either currently nationally ranked among high school girls, or have been in the national rankings in recent months.

Leading the way for Wyoming Seminary was freshman Korina Blades of Broadview, Ill., who won two matches on the card at 57 kg. Ranked No. 7 nationally, Blades opened with a close 3-2 decision over No. 5 Skylar Hattendorf of Hookset, N.H. In the final match of the dual meet, Blades pinned Naomi Henry of Brooklyn, N.Y., in 3:21.

Her sister, No. 2 ranked Kennedy Blades of Broadview, Ill., also had a big win for Wyoming Seminary, scoring a 10-0 technical fall over No. 4 Alexis Gomez of Carol Stream, Ill. at 72 kg. Blades won the Cadet Nationals last year, and Gomez is a past Junior Nationals champion.

One of the big wins for Wyoming Seminary came in the opening bout, as No. 12 Ava Bayless of Greenville, Pa. controlled No. 7 Estrella Dorado Marin of Denver, Colo., 7-0 at 46 kg.

The other winners for Wyoming Seminary were No. 13 Sophia Smith of Bismarck, N.D. at 57 kg and No. 12 Reese Larramendy of Reno, Nev. at 65 kg.

There were two battles between No. 1 and No. 2 wrestlers, which were both won by the No. 1 ranked athlete who competed on the USA All-Stars, beating their Wyoming Seminary opponent.

At 50 kg, No. 1 Mia Palumbo of Oak Lawn, Ill. defeated No. 2 Caitlyn Walker of Hatboro, Pa., 8-4. It was a rematch of the 2018 Junior Nationals finals, also won by Palumbo.

At 55 kg, No. 1 Stefana Jelacic of Fountain Hills, Ariz. edged No. 2 Vayle-Rae Baker of Benton, Pa., 3-1.

Another rising star on the USA All-Stars, freshman Amit Elor of Concord, Calif., scored a takedown and multiple ankle laces to defeat No. 10 Tiffani Baublitz of Stewartstown, Pa., in a 10-0 technical fall at 67 kg.

No. 7 Estrella Dorado Marin of Denver, Colo. went 1-1 for the day at 46 kg, coming from behind to defeat Wyoming Seminary’s No. 15 Abbygale Duke of Patterson, N.Y. in a wide-open 11-8 decision.

The Wyoming Seminary College Preparatory School is located in Kingston, Pa., and its girls team is coached by former Women’s Team USA athlete and coach Erin Vandiver and four-time World champion Adeline Gray. The young women train and compete in freestyle, the international style. The program is supported by USA Wrestling as an accelerated elite girls developmental program.
