by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – After the first session of action, defending team champion Lehigh leads early in the team race at the 2019 EIWA Championships in Binghamton, N.Y.
With nine quarterfinalists, Lehigh holds a one-point lead over second-place Princeton, thanks to six falls on the championship side of the bracket.
Going into tonight’s session, Lehigh has 24.5 points, while Princeton has 23.5 points and Cornell sits in third with 23 points.
Of those heading to the quarters for Lehigh are defending EIWA champions Jordan Kutler at 174 pounds and Ryan Presich at 184 pounds.
Kulter, a 2018 All-American, picked up a first-round win over Anthony Falbo of Sacred Heart, who was disqualified in the second period after receiving five stall calls.
Presich, the No. 3 seed, spent only 2:19 on the mat, winning by pin against Robert Ng from Penn.
The lone weight where a Mountain Hawk won’t be present in the quarterfinals is 125 pounds.
Princeton put seven in the quarters, including two-time EIWA champion and two-time All-American Matthew Kolodzik, who is the only wrestler in the field looking for his third conference title.
In the round of 16, Kolodzik registered a 17-2 technical fall over Patrick Quinlan from Franklin & Marshall at 149 pounds.
2018 Junior Pan American champion Lenny Merkin (165) and third-ranked Patrick Brucki (197) are among the other six Tigers to advance.
For Cornell, 2018 NCAA champion and two-time Cadet World champion Yianni Diakomihalis advanced to the quarterfinals at 141 pounds, sticking Ryan Friedman of Harvard in 1:52.
Joining him in the quarters is 2018 Junior Greco-Roman World silver medalist Andrew Berreyesa at 165 pounds, 2016 Cadet Freestyle World silver medalist Vitali Arujau at 125 pounds and 2018 NCAA All-American Max Dean at 184 pounds.
Also wrestling in the quarters is 2017 EIWA champion Brandon Womack at 174 pounds. The weight is the only bracket in the tournament with two past EIWA champions as Kutler is also in the field.
With nine wrestlers making it to the quarters, the Big Red will not be represented at 157 pounds on the championship side of the bracket.
Army West Point is the only school to send all 10 wrestlers to the quarterfinals. The Black Knights hold onto fourth place with 18 points, going into tonight’s session.
2018 Junior World Team member Lou DePrez leads host school Binghamton’s six quarterfinalists. DePrez put together a 6-0 win over Kyle Davis of Sacred Heart in the first round at 184 pounds.
The quarterfinals are set for Friday at 6 p.m. ET live on Flowrestling.org.
