RUSE, Bulgaria – The United States came home with four medals during the first day of medal action at the Dan Kolov International, a UWW Ranking Tournament.
Claiming a gold medal at 79 kg/174 lbs. was Alex Dieringer (Stillwater, Okla./TMWC/Cowboy RTC), who scored an impressive first-period 10-0 technical fall over 2018 U23 World bronze medalist Omarakhab Nazhmudinov of Romania in the finals.
Dieringer hit a pair of four-point takedowns, putting Nazhmudinov on his back from the feet, for an 8-0 lead. He quickly hit another double leg takedown out of bounds for the final two points for the technical fall.
Dieringer scored a solid 6-0 victory over 2018 U23 World champion Nika Kentchadze of Georgia in the semifinals. In his earlier bouts, Dieringer scored two other technical falls, stopping Muhammet Nuri Kotanoglu of Turkey, 11-0 and Zaur Efendiev of Serbia, 10-0.
Dieringer, a three-time NCAA champion for Oklahoma State, is currently No. 3 on the Freestyle National Team.
Three U.S. athletes captured bronze medals: two-time World medalist James Green (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids/Nebraska WTC) at 70 kg/154 lbs. and Michael Macchiavello (Raleigh, N.C./Wolfpack RTC) at 92 kg/202.5 lbs. in men’s freestyle, plus 2018 World Team member Forrest Molinari (Iowa City, Iowa/TMWC/Hawkeye WC) at 65 kg/143 lbs.
