Tulsa, Okla. - Oklahoma Red stopped Illinois from winning Junior National Duals in both Greco-Roman and men’s freestyle when they defeated them 32-31 in the finals today. This marks the third time since 2014 that Oklahoma has won Junior National Duals in men’s freestyle.
The showdown came down to the final match between the evenly matched teams. Oklahoma won eight matches and Illinois won seven matches.
Illinois got on the board first with a 10-0 tech fall from David Ferrante at 170 lbs. Ferrante couldn’t have been much more diverse in his attacks using a single leg, re-attack, gut wrench, double leg, and leg lace to secure the tech fall with 24 seconds left in the first period.
Oklahoma answered back at 182 lbs. in one of the marquee matchups of the dual. Oklahoma State commit Dustin Plott defeated Iowa commit and 2018 Cadet World bronze medalist Abe Assad 4-2. Plott scored first getting to a single leg and pushing Assad out a minute into the match. At the 1:47 mark, Plott got in on a shot and Assad hit a crotch lift but Plott didn’t expose. Illinois challenged the call, but the call was upheld giving Plott his four points. Assad scored on a locked fingers call and a step out but was unable to close the four-point gap.
At 195 lbs., Brandon Hoselton of Illinois got up 8-0 on Cabe Dickerson of Oklahoma two minutes into the first period. Dickerson was able to prevent Hoselton from scoring anymore points, but Hoselton still prevailed 8-3.
Konnor Douchet, another Oklahoma State commit, looked impressive at 220 lbs. Douchet used two blast double four-point takedowns in route to a 13-0 tech fall over Ramin Abraham.
At 285 lbs., Oklahoma commit Joshua Heindsleman edged out a close 3-2 victory over Aydin Guttridge of Illinois. Heindsleman scored all three points on step outs.
In a rematch of this year’s FloNationals final, Daniel Sheen of Illinois defeated Christian Forbes 10-0. Sheen took a 2-0 lead into the second period before hitting a double leg and three leg laces to secure the tech fall.
Oklahoma came right back with a tech fall of their own in the next match. Cooper Mahaffey used a crafty four-point throw while up 6-0 2:20 into the first period. Illinois challenged, but the call was upheld giving Mahaffey the 11-0 tech fall over Carson Nishida.
Cruz Aguilar wasted no time at 113 lbs. The Oklahoma native hit a gator roll and stepped over his opponent to pick up a pin in just 18 seconds.
Mikey Kaminski answered for Illinois at 120 lbs. Kaminski used a variety of takedowns before hitting two leg laces to secure the tech fall 40 seconds into the second period.
Oklahoma came right back with a tech fall of their own in the next match when Carter Young defeated Brady Norman 10-0. Young used five takedowns en route to the first period tech fall.
At 132 lbs., Reece Witcraft of Oklahoma outlasted Joel Vandervere of Illinois in a barnburner of a match. Down 5-6 in the second period, Witcraft hit a high crotch and picked up an exposure to take the lead with 30 seconds remaining. This made the team score 31-17 for Oklahoma, the largest lead of the dual meet.
Noah Villarreal started a three match run for Illinois when he pinned Ryder Ramsey in a spladle at 138 lbs. Luke Odom and Trevor Chumbley both picked up 10-0 tech falls in the following two matches for Illinois, putting them in the lead 31-28.
Oklahoma State commit Luke Surber sealed the deal for Oklahoma when he tech falled Fidel Mayora in 1:17.
