SOFIA, Bulgaria – Marc-Anthony McGowan became the first American to guarantee the USA a medal at the 2019 Cadet World Championships, earning a spot in the men’s freestyle finals at 45 kg.
McGowan, who turned 15 in May, defeated 2019 Cadet European bronze medalist Tolga Ozbek in the semifinals, scoring a crucial second-period takedown for a 2-2 win on criteria.
It was his third win of the day as McGowan also triumphed over wrestlers from India and Armenia in the first session.
Tomorrow for gold, McGowan will go head-to-head with 2019 Cadet Asian gold medalist Ali Arab Firouzjaei of Iran.
2018 Cadet World bronze medalist Alex Facundo was pulled back into repechage at 71 kg and will get a shot at another World medal.
Soslan Tigiev of Russia, whom Facundo lost to in the second round, advanced to the finals at the weight, defeating 2019 Cadet European silver medalist Davit Kutchuashvili of Georgia with a pin.
In repechage, Facundo will face Francesco Masotti of Italy first. Masotti took 17th at the 2018 Cadet European Championships.
Jesse Mendez at 60 kg and Kyle Haas at 92 kg were eliminated from the competition tonight as their victors failed to advance to the finals.
2018 Cadet World silver medalist Richard Figueroa was knocked out of the tournament earlier in the day.
