Micky Phillippi (Derry, Pa. /Pittsburgh WC) will compete at 61 kg/134 lbs. in men’s freestyle at the 2019 U23 World Championships.

He replaces U23 World Team Trials champion Charles Tucker (Worcester, Mass./Cornell), who declined his position on the team.

The U23 World Championships will be held in Budapest, Hungary, October 28-November 3.

Phillippi placed second to Tucker at the U23 World Team Trials in Akron, Ohio in late May. Tucker defeated Phillippi in the best-of-three championship series in two straight matches, 10-0 and 4-0. Seeded seventh, Phillippi won five straight bouts to reach the championship finals against Tucker.

Phillippi was an ACC champion and NCAA qualifier at 133 pounds as a redshirt freshman for the University of Pittsburgh this past season. He finished with a 2-2 record at the 2019 NCAA Championships.

Phillippi started his career at the University of Virginia, and transferred to Pitt after his first season with the Cavaliers. He was a three-time Pennsylvania state champion for Derry Area High School in Pennsylvania.

Although he did not compete extensively in freestyle in high school, Phillippi competed in the University Nationals and the UWW Junior Nationals in his first year in college, and at the U23 Nationals the last two years. He was third at the 2019 Last Chance Senior World Team Trials Qualifier, and also wrestled at the 2018 U.S. Senior Open.
