KRASONYARSK, Russia – Four Americans are still in the hunt for a medal after the first day of competition at the Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix, UWW’s first Ranking Series event of the year for men’s and women’s freestyle.

Representing U.S. women, past Senior World Team members Victoria Anthony and Forrest Molinari have landed spots in the bronze-medal match at 50 kg and 65 kg, respectively.

Two-time Senior World Team member and two-time Junior World champion Anthony was stuck in her 50 kg semifinal bout against 2011 Cadet World bronze winner Anzhelika Vetoshkina from Russia, sending the American to tomorrow’s bronze match.

For a medal, Anthony will take on multiple-time international medalist Elena Vostrikova of Russia.

Molinari lost in the semifinals after falling short in a late comeback bid against Mariia Kuznetsova of Russia. The 2018 Senior and U23 World Team member dropped the bout, 7-4.

In tomorrow’s bronze medal match, Molinari will take on Yulia Prontsevitch of Russia.

2017 Senior World silver medalist Thomas Gilman was pulled into repechage at 57 kg, when 2018 Junior World champion Abasgadzhi Magomedov of Russia advanced to the finals, defeating two-time World bronze medalist Bekhbayar Erdenebat of Mongolia.

With a Mongolian loss, it ended Zane Richards’ 2019 Yarygin run. Richards dropped a heartbreaker to Erdenebat, 8-7, in the first round.

In his first repechage match, Gilman will face three-time Junior World champion Ahmet Peker of Turkey. Should Gilman advance, he’ll take on Erdenebat for bronze.

Similarly at 70 kg, two Russian wrestlers—with victories over Americans James Green and Jason Chamberlain—went head-to-head in the semis.

Chamberlain was eventually pulled into repechage when 2018 Senior World champion Magomedrasul Gazimagomedov defeated 2017 Junior World champion David Baev.

The Baev loss resulted in two-time World medalist Green being eliminated from the tournament.

Chamberlain will face 2018 Junior World silver medalist Razambek Zhamalov of Russia in his first repechage match. Should Chamberlain advance, he’ll face Baev for bronze.

2018 Senior World bronze medalist Joe Colon was knocked out of the tournament when Eduard Grigorev of Russia suffered a loss in the semifinals. Colon lost to Grigorev in the quarterfinals, 10-1.

The tournament continues Friday at 11 a.m. local time (Thursday at 11 p.m. U.S. ET) on Flowrestling.org.
