Burroughs family to host NCAA kickoff party in Pittsburgh
by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
What started with a Twitter poll now has the potential to be the party of the year for wrestling fans.
Jordan Burroughs, a five-time World and Olympic champion, and his wife, Lauren Burroughs, have announced that they will be throwing a giant celebration on Wednesday, March 20 at 7:30 p.m. ET at Jay Verno Studios in Pittsburgh to start the NCAA Wrestling Division I Championships weekend off with a bang.
“We wanted to provide an opportunity for people to celebrate wrestling and give them a chance to mingle with members of Team USA,” Lauren said. “It’s hard to identify with Team USA at times because we are all spread out around the country. There are two times a year when Team USA members, families and fans are all together. One is the World Championships, which is great, but it’s usually on foreign soil, and not everybody can afford that. The second one is NCAAs. If you love wrestling and you can make it to NCAAs, that’s where you are that weekend. It doesn’t matter what city they’re held in or what it takes for you to get there. You’ll be at the NCAAs.”
There are already a few special guests lined up for the bash, including Olympic champions Kyle Snyder and Helen Maroulis, 2018 World champion David Taylor and, of course, Jordan Burroughs.
In addition with getting to hang out some of USA Wrestling’s biggest stars, the Burroughs have a bigger purpose for the party.
“Through this, we have the opportunity to bring together some of the best wrestlers in the world and a bunch of fans, who support us,” Jordan said. “While we’re at it, why don’t we raise a bunch of money for a local youth wrestling club, especially because the NCAAs are in a different city every year, so it allows us to make a big impact as a wrestling community.”
With tickets to the event at $150 a pop and a silent auction on the itinerary, all proceeds will go to a local youth wrestling club in the Pittsburgh area.
Clubs interested in being considered for the scholarship can submit a request HERE, explaining their need for the money raised. After careful consideration, Jordan and Lauren will pick the club that they feel is most deserving and will announce it on March 20 at the party with a check presentation.
Additionally, USA Wrestling will honor 2018’s men’s freestyle standouts with the Wrestler of the Year Award, Coach of the Year Award and Man of the Year Award.
Anyone is welcome, but all who wish to attend MUST purchase a ticket. There will be no complimentary tickets available, as the focus will be on raising funds for youth wrestling. Tickets are limited.
