Gable Steveson returned to the Minnesota lineup and returned to the rankings this week, leading to a reshuffling of the team order in the latest edition of the Trackwrestling Division I Rankings presented by Resilite.
Steveson posted a major decision in his season debut during the Gophers’ dual win against South Dakota State on Friday. The All-American sophomore heavyweight moved back into the rankings at No. 2 behind Penn State national champion Anthony Cassar.
As a result, Minnesota made a seven-notch jump in the team standings during a light week of competition on the Division I front.
Iowa remains on top of the rankings with 135 projected NCAA placement and advancement points, followed by Penn State (97.5), Ohio State (60.5), Arizona State (50.5), Wisconsin (49.5), Minnesota (48), Northwestern (47), North Carolina State (43.5), Nebraska (43) and Princeton (43).
The Trackwrestling team rankings are based strictly on the number of advancement and placement points each squad would accumulate if its wrestlers finished in those ranking slots at the NCAA Championships. Top-ranked wrestlers earn 20 points, followed by 16 for second, 13.5 for third, 12.5 for fourth, 10 for fifth, 9 for sixth, 6.5 for seventh, 5.5 for eighth, 2 for spots 9-12, 1.5 for spots 13-16 and 1 for 17-25. Team dual outcomes are not factored into the team rankings.
The Trackwrestling rankings go out to 33, representing the number of wrestlers who will qualify for the NCAA Championships at each weight class.
The rankings are coordinated by David Mirikitani and Mark Ostrander.
