North Carolina All-American Austin O’Connor and North Carolina State 197-pounder Nick Reenan returned to competition last weekend and returned to the Trackwrestling Division I Rankings presented by Resilite.
O’Connor moved back to the top of the 149-pound rankings after winning the Cleveland State Open and Reenan moved back into the 197-pound rankings at No. 11 after winning his season debut. Both wrestlers were removed a week ago for inactivity during the first month of the season.
Their returns helped reshape the team rankings.
O’Connor helped North Carolina return to the Top 20. The Tar Heels check in this week in a tie for 18th.
Reenan and the Wolfpack check in this week at No. 7.
Iowa continues to hold a firm grip on the No. 1 spot. The Hawkeyes lead the field with 136 projected NCAA placement and advancement points. Iowa is followed by Penn State (94), Ohio State (61.5), Wisconsin (52), Arizona State (51.5), Northwestern (47), North Carolina State (43.5), Nebraska (43), Oklahoma State (41) and Princeton (40.5).
The Trackwrestling team rankings are based strictly on the number of advancement and placement points each squad would accumulate if its wrestlers finished in those ranking slots at the NCAA Championships. Top-ranked wrestlers earn 20 points, followed by 16 for second, 13.5 for third, 12.5 for fourth, 10 for fifth, 9 for sixth, 6.5 for seventh, 5.5 for eighth, 2 for spots 9-12, 1.5 for spots 13-16 and 1 for 17-25. Team dual outcomes are not factored into the team rankings.
The Trackwrestling rankings go out to 33, representing the number of wrestlers who will qualify for the NCAA Championships at each weight class.
The rankings are coordinated by David Mirikitani and Mark Ostrander.
