Las Vegas, Nev. – The quarterfinals have concluded at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational setting the stage for tomorrow morning’s semifinals.
19 out of the 20 first and second seeded wrestlers are still alive in the brackets. The lone exception is at 197 pounds where the No. 7 seed Christian Brunner of Purdue defeated the No. 2 seed Jay Aiello of Virginia, 4-2. Aiello is currently ranked No. 9 by Flowrestling and Brunner is No. 19.
In the semifinals, Brunner will face the No. 6 seed Jake Woodley of Oklahoma, who is currently ranked No. 16. Woodley defeated the No. 3 seed Tanner Sloan of South Dakota State, 5-3. Sloan is currently ranked No. 11.
At 133 pounds, unseeded Dylan Koontz of Ohio State kept his run going with a 5-4 decision over No. 4 seed Jarrett Trombley of NC State. Tomorrow morning he will face No. 1 seed Chas Tucker of Cornell.
141 pounds will provide two exciting semifinals. On the top half of the bracket two-time All-American Luke Pletcher of Ohio State will take on two-time All-American Chad Red of Nebraska. The two wrestled several times in high school but have yet to meet in college. To make the semifinals, Red pinned 2018 All-American of NC State with a cradle in 33 seconds.
The other side of the bracket will feature 2019 All-Americans Mitch McKee of Minnesota and Dom Demas of Oklahoma squaring off.
The bottom half of the 157 pound bracket has two age-group-level medalists meeting up, when David Carr of Iowa State takes on Ryan Deakin of Northwestern. Carr is a 2019 Junior World champion and a 2016 Cadet World bronze medalist while Deakin is a 2017 Junior World silver medalist.
Another match to watch is the 184 pound semifinal featuring Trent Hidlay of NC State and Taylor Lujan of Northern Iowa. Hidlay is currently ranked No. 2 in the country while Lujan is ranked No. 5.
Action will resume tomorrow morning at 12:00 pm eastern time and will be streamed live on Flowrestling.
