Trackwrestling Division I Rankings: Iowa takes over the No. 1 spot
by Andy Hamilton, Trackwrestling
There’s a new No. 1 — in the team rankings and at the top of the 133-pound heap.
Powered by wins Sunday night from Austin DeSanto, Alex Marinelli and Tony Cassioppi against previously higher-ranked opponents from Wisconsin, Iowa surged past Penn State to claim the No. 1 spot in the latest edition of the Trackwrestling Division I Tournament Rankings presented by Resilite.
DeSanto grabbed the No. 1 ranking at 133 after toppling 2018 NCAA champ Seth Gross 6-2. He joins 125-pound teammate Spencer Lee atop the individual rankings.
Marinelli vaulted up three notches to No. 2 at 165 after downing Evan Wick 4-2 and Cassioppi climbed from No. 12 up to No. 4 at heavyweight after beating Trent Hillger 3-2.
Those three individual moves helped the Hawkeyes make big gains in the team standings. Iowa picked up 20.5 projected NCAA placement and advancement points to check in this week at 128. Penn State is second with 111.
Nebraska traded places with Ohio State yet again and reclaimed the No. 3 spot with 60.5 points with the Buckeyes in fourth with 57 points.
Northern Iowa moved into a tie for fifth — the highest the Panthers have been in the four-year history of the Trackwrestling rankings — with Arizona State at 48.5 points.
Oklahoma State (48), North Carolina State (44.5), Iowa State (43) and Wisconsin (42.5) round out the top 10.
The Trackwrestling team rankings are based strictly on the number of advancement and placement points each squad would accumulate if its wrestlers finished in those ranking slots at the NCAA Championships. Top-ranked wrestlers earn 20 points, followed by 16 for second, 13.5 for third, 12.5 for fourth, 10 for fifth, 9 for sixth, 6.5 for seventh, 5.5 for eighth, 2 for spots 9-12, 1.5 for spots 13-16 and 1 for 17-25. Team dual outcomes are not factored into the team rankings.
The Trackwrestling rankings go out to 33, representing the number of wrestlers who will qualify for the NCAA Championships at each weight class.
The rankings are coordinated by David Mirikitani and Mark Ostrander.
