Schultz wins silver medal, Nutter claims bronze at Junior Worlds in Greco-Roman

TALLINN, Estonia –Cohlton Schultz (Parker, Colo./Sunkist Kids/EAP) captured a silver medal at 130 kg/286 lbs. at the Junior World Championships on Saturday night.
He was edged by Aliakbar Hossein Yousofiahmadchali of Iran in the gold-medal finals, 2-1. No offensive points were scored in the match. Schultz scored first when Yousofiahmadchali was penalized for passivity, and he led 1-0 at the break. In the second period, Schultz was penalized twice for passivity, giving two points to Yousofiahmadchali. Neither wrestler was close to completing a takedown in the match.
Yousofiahmadchali was a 2018 U23 World bronze medalist, and won the 2019 Asian Junior Championships.
Schultz had four big wins on Friday. He started with a pair of technical falls, beating Dariusz Vitek of Hungary, 10-2 and Aawesh Aawesh of India, 9-0. His quarterfinal win was over Hamdy Aly Issa of Egypt., 5-0. In the semifinals, he pinned Lu Zhang of China in 1:42
With his performance this weekend, Schultz now has three career age-group World medals. Included are his 2017 Cadet World gold medal, 2018 Junior World bronze medal and 2019 Junior World silver medal.
Schultz is competing in his sixth age-group World Championships for Team USA. This is Schultz’ third Junior World Team, also competing in 2017 and 2018. He competed on two Cadet World Teams (2016 and 2017) and the 2018 U23 World Team. Schultz is going into his freshman year at Arizona State.
With a stunning throw to a fall, Alston Nutter (Fennimore, Wis./Sunkist Kids/NMU-OTS) claimed a bronze medal at 63 kg/139 lbs. earlier in the medal-match finals session.
Nutter squared off with Kamil Czarnecki of Poland, who was ninth in the 2017 European Championships. Czarnecki came out quickly, hitting an arm spin for a takedown, then turning Nutter twice with gut wrenches to jump to a 6-0 lead. Nutter kept his composure and was able to capitalize on an opening, throwing Czarnecki and finishing off the fall in 1:15.
It was typical of the kind of wrestling Nutter brought to this event, which was high energy action with plenty of risk taking. Although two points away from losing by a technical fall, Nutter was able to strike quickly and create the opportunity to win.
On Friday, Nutter scored a pin of Zaur Nuriyev of Azerbaijan, then defeated Assaukhat Mukhamadiyev of Kazakhstan, 5-2 in quarterfinals during the morning session. He was defeated by 2015 Cadet World silver medalist Abu Muslim Aptievitch Amaev of Russia, in a 9-0 technical fall in the semifinals.
Nutter competes for the Northern Michigan University – Olympic Training Site (NMU-OTS) program at Northern Michigan. He was also a member of the 2018 U.S. Junior World Team.
2018 Pan American Junior champion Cameron Caffey (Carbondale, Ill./Michigan State) finished in eighth place at 87 kg/191.5 lbs., winning a repechage match by fall Saturday morning and falling just short of the medal rounds. Caffey attends Michigan State.
The United States is currently in fifth place in the standings after five weight classes, with 41 points. Russia leads the field, with Iran, Goergia and Turkey currently ahead of the USA.
The USA has one other athlete remaining in the tournament, as Peyton Omania (Concord, Calif./Michigan State/CYC) will go for a bronze medal at 67 kg/147 lbs. on Sunday night, after a strong day of wrestling on Saturday, with a 4-1 record
