Kilty, Fiske advance to the semifinals in women’s freestyle at Junior Worlds

TALLINN, Estonia – Two U.S. women’s freestyle wrestlers won their quarterfinal bouts to advance to Thursday night’s semifinal round at the Junior World Championships.
2018 Cadet World champion and three-time age-group World medalist Macey Kilty (Stratford, Wis./Sunkist Kids) won both of her matches by technical fall to advance to the semifinals, where she will face Hanna Sadchanka of Belarus. Sadchanka has competed for Belarus on the Senior level, but has no Junior level medals of note.
Kilty was dominant in her first match, a 10-0 technical fall over 2016 Mediterranean Junior champion Nerea Pampin Blanco of Spain. Kilty scored three takedowns and two turns to finish the bout in the opening period.
She continued her dominance in the quarterfinals with a 12-1 technical over Wiktoria Choluj of Poland. The bout was tied at 1-1 early, but Kilty added 11 straight points, including some late ankle lace turns to close out the victory.
In addition to her Cadet World gold, Kilty was also a 2018 Junior World silver medalist and a 2016 Cadet World bronze medalist. She is a member of the Senior Women’s National Team, at No. 3 on the ladder.
2018 Junior World Team member Alyvia Fiske (Napa, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) also won in the quarterfinals, stopping Johanna Meier of Germany with a dominant 10-0 technical fall.
Fiske has drawn 2017 and 2018 Cadet World champion Yuka Kagami of Japan in the semifinals. Kagami won a 2019 Asian Senior gold medal.
Fiske will compete at the 2019 U23 World Championships in October. Fiske placed second at the 2019 Final X and won a U.S. Senior Open title in 2019. She is a WCWA All-American for Simon Fraser.
Team USA won all five of their preliminary bouts and had an athlete in each of the five weights in the quarterfinals.
Three U.S. women who won their first match were defeated in the quarterfinals round. They will need the athlete who beat them to win in the semifinals in order to be pulled into repechage.
Two-time age-group World medalist Alara Boyd (Yorktown, Ind./CIA) opened with a pin of 2018 Asian Junior champion Irina Kuznetsova of Kazakhstan in 3:39 at 62 kg/138.75 lbs.. Kuznetsova led 4-2 at the break, and early in the second period, she attempted to throw Boyd, but was blocked. Boyd ended up on top with Kuznetsova on her back, and Boyd finished off the fall.
In the quarterfinals, Boyd fell behind early and ultimately fell to Irnia Ringaci of Moldova in a 10-0 technical fall. Ringaci scored five different takedowns on the way to the victory.
2016 Cadet World bronze medalist Gracie Figueroa (Selma, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) lost her quarterfinal at 53 kg/116.5 lbs. to Mariia Tiumerekova of Russia, 8-5. Figueroa scored the first takedown, but Tiumerekova answered with a takedown and two ankle lace turns to lead 6-2. Figueroa battled back but was not able to close the gap in the second period.
In her opening match, Figueroa scored three takedowns to defeat Rahime Ari of Turkey, 6-3. Figueroa jumped to a 6-0 lead early in the second period, a lead which Ari could not overcome.
Cameron Guerin (Yakima, Wash./Titan Mercury WC/EAP) was pinned in her quarterfinals at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. by Alina Akobiia of Ukraine in 1:57. Guerin had the first takedown and got a turn , but Akobiia was able to reverse her and power Guerin to her back and finished off the fall.
Guerin got the lead early and controlled the action in a first-round 9-3 win over 2019 Pan American Junior champion Ana Luiza Perreira Franca of Brazil.
The semifinals will begin at 5:15 p.m. tonight, and will be followed at 6:00 p.m. with the medal matches for the first set of women’s wrestlers. American Jayden Laurent will be going for a gold at 68 kg during that second session.
