by Mike Willis, USA Wrestling
Minsk Belarus- On the second day of wrestling at the Medved International Nate Jackson (New York Athletic Club) took home a gold medal at 86 kg. He controlled his finals match against Shapiev of Uzbekistan early, taking a 7-0 lead. Shapiev was able to battle back late to cut the lead to 7-4, but Jackson held on to bring home the title.
Ty Walz (Titan Mercury WC) finished in second place at 97 kg. In the finals he fell to Olympic and World bronze medalist, Saritov of Romania, 3-2. Down 3-0 in the second period, Walz was able to secure a takedown. However, it wasn’t enough to beat the former Russian.
At 125 kg, Gable Steveson was dominant in the early rounds of the tournament, earning a 10-0 technical fall over Lakeyenk of Belarus and another 10-0 technical fall victory over fellow American Jordan Wood in the semifinals. Wood won his opening bout, 12-1, over Ercan of Turkey and will wrestle Lakeyenk tomorrow for bronze.
Tyler Graff at 61 kg, Chance Marsteller at 79 kg and Michael Macchiavello at 92 kg all dropped their opening matches but were pulled back into tomorrow’s repechage when their opponents made the finals.
James Green went 0-1 at 70 kg, falling to I. Navruzov of Russia, 6-4. Ryan Deakin, the other American at 70 kg, won his first two matches 10-0 and 13-3 before also falling to Navruzov, 8-6. Naruzov lost in the semifinals, so neither American was pulled back into repechage.
Action will resume tomorrow at 6 a.m.
