2017 Cadet World champion and 2018 Junior World bronze medalist Cohlton Schultz (Parker, Colo./Sunkist Kids/EAP) leads the 2019 U.S. Greco-Roman World Team at the UWW Junior World Championships in Tallinn, Estonia next week.
The UWW Junior World age-group includes athletes who are 17-20 years old. All 10 team members earned their spots with victories at the UWW Junior Greco-Roman Nationals in April.
Schultz will be competing in his sixth age-group World Championships for Team USA. He will be joined by three other teammates who have competed in past age-group World Championship competition.
This will be Schultz’ third Junior World Team, also competing in 2017 and 2018. He competed on two Cadet World Teams (2016 and 2017) and the 2018 U23 World Team. Schultz wrestled Greco-Roman in all six of these competitions.
He made his mark on the Senior level this year, placing second behind Adam Coon in Final X and winning the Senior World Team Trials Challenge Tournament. A four-time Colorado state champion for Ponderosa High School, Schultz is going into his freshman year at Arizona State.
Competing in his third age-group World Championships is Peyton Omania (Concord, Calif./Michigan State/CYC) at 67 kg/147 lbs. Omania was a teammate of Schultz on the 2018 U.S. Junior World Team, and also competed in the 2016 Cadet World Championships, both in Greco-Roman. Omania was a 2018 Junior Nationals champion and 2017 Junior Nationals runner-up in Greco-Roman. He enters his redshirt freshman year at Michigan State.
Another member of the 2018 U.S. Junior World Team who returns is Alston Nutter (Fennimore, Wis./Sunkist Kids/NMU-OTS) at 63 kg/139 lbs. Nutter competes for the Northern Michigan University – Olympic Training Site (NMU-OTS) program at Northern Michigan. He was a 2017 Junior Nationals runner-up and a 2015 Wisconsin state champion for Fennimore High School.
Dylan Ragusin (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Izzy Style), a 2017 U.S. Cadet World Team member, will compete at 55 kg/121 lbs. Ragusin won three Cadet National titles in his career, two in Greco-Roman and one in freestyle. A 2019 Illinois state champion for Montini Catholic High School, Ragusin is a rising freshman at Stanford.
Ragusin joins another Stanford wrestler on the roster, redshirt freshman Tyler Eischens (Anoka, Minn./Stanford/California RTC) at 72 kg/158 lbs. Eischens was a runner-up in Greco-Roman at the 2018 Junior Nationals and 2016 Cadet Nationals. He won six All-American honors at Fargo Nationals events while in high school, and a 2017 Minnesota state high school champion for Anoka High School.
Two Michigan State wrestlers will compete in Tallinn, as Cameron Caffey (Carbondale, Ill./Michigan State) will wrestle at 87 kg/191.5 lbs., joining Omania on the team. Caffey was a 2018 Pan American Junior champion in both freestyle and Greco-Roman. A 2017 Junior Nationals runner-up in Greco-Roman, Caffey was a 2017 Illinois state champion for Carbondale High School.
There are two NMU-OTS athletes on this team, Nutter and Mason Hartshorn (Antioch, Calif./NMU-OTS) at 60 kg/132 lbs. Hartshorn was also second in the 2018 UWW Junior Nationals.
One of the most experienced athletes on the team is Nicholas Boykin (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids/OTC), who competes at 97 kg/213 lbs. Boykin is a resident athlete at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center (USOPTC) in Colorado Springs, Colo. He has been a placewinner in international events in Sweden, Croatia, Austria and Cuba. Boykin won three Tennessee state titles for Riverdale High School before moving to the USOPTC.
Another NCAA Div. I wrestler on the team is Illinois redshirt freshman Zachary Braunagel (O’Fallon, Ill./Illinois RTC) at 82 kg/180.5 lbs. Braunagel was a 2018 Junior Nationals champion in Greco-Roman, and boasts five All-American honors from Fargo. He also added a 2019 Pan American Junior title in Greco-Roman. Braunagel won two Illinois state titles for Althoff Catholic High School, before joining the Illinois program last year.
An incoming freshman for Div. I Campbell University, Jack Ervien (Bonny Lake, Wash./Takedown Express WC), holds down the spot at 77 kg/169.5 lbs. Ervien powered through a strong field at the UWW Junior Nationals in Las Vegas in April. Ervien was a 2019 Washington state high school runner-up last year for White River High School.
Greco-Roman is the final style contested at Junior World Championships, with three days of competition from August 16-18. Each weight class will compete over two days, with semifinals on the first day and medal matches on the second day.
Medal match finals for the five weight classes, will be on Saturday, August 17. The U.S. athletes at those weight classes are 55 kg (Ragusin, 63 kg (Nutter), 77 kg (Ervien), 87 kg (Caffey), 130 kg (Schultz).
