Cadet Pan American Team determined, 21 wrestlers win freestyle titles on final day of FloNationals

Indiana, Penn. - With the conclusion of FloNationals day three, 11 wrestlers have been crowned Junior Freestyle champions, 10 wrestlers have been crowned Cadet Freestyle champions, and 10 wrestlers have been determined as the 2019 Cadet Pan American Championships Team that will represent the U.S. at the 2019 Cadet Pan American Championships in Morelia, Mexico, June 28-30.
Because Team USA will only be bringing one representative per weight to the Cadet Pan American Championships, a point system was put in place to determine the representative at each weight. Points were allocated by placement in both freestyle and Greco-Roman. The higher the placement, the more points a wrestler received. The wrestler with the most points at the conclusion of both tournaments, wins the Cadet Pan American Team spot.
In Cadet Freestyle action, Marc-Anthony McGowan (Tampa, Fla./BB Trained) reversed the result of the 48 kg Greco-Roman final when he beat Daniel Sheen (St. Charles, Ill./Izzy Style) 10-0. With McGowan and Sheen splitting titles, the two were tied on points, but McGowan led on the first deciding criteria, number of pins. McGowan had one pin on the weekend, Sheen had zero.
After trailing 9-0, Joseph Fisher (Johnstown, Penn./Young Gunns) stormed back to win 11-11 on criteria in the 48 kg final. Fisher was awarded a twelfth point after a failed challenge by Kelly Dunnigan (Waldwick, N.J/Edge Wrestling).
Down 2-2 on criteria, Joey Cruz (Clovis, Calif./Clovis North) scored a takedown as time expired to beat Arizona State commit and 2018 Cadet World silver medalist Richard Figueroa II (Sanger, Calif./Sunkist Kids WC) in a rematch of last year’s FloNationals final. Because both of those wrestlers only wrestled freestyle, Nico Provo (Stratford, Conn./Southside) had the most Pan American team trials points at 51 kg.
At 55 kg, Jacob Rundell (Oak Park, Ill./The Wrestling Academy) completed an outstanding tournament when he beat Nicolar Rivera (Stought, Wisc./Team Wisconsin) 12-0 in the finals. Rundell didn’t give up a single point in freestyle, and only two points in Greco.
After getting second in Greco, Jesse Mendez (Crown Point, Ind./Bulldog Premier WC) came back to win freestyle at 60 kg and earn himself a spot on the Cadet Pan Am team.
Joseph Zargo and (South River, N.J./Rhino Wrestling) and Matthew Singleton (Moreland,Ga./Woodward Academy) put on a show in 65 kg final, scoring a combined 19 points in just four total minutes of wrestling. Zargo won the bout 13-6.
AJ Kovacs (Danbury, Conn./Empire Wrestling Academy) had a great tournament, tech falling his way through the 71 kg bracket. Similar to 51 kg, however, Kovacs only wrestled freestyle, so John Martin Best (Vienna, W.V./Team West Virginia) will be the representative the country at Pan Ams.
Nebraska commit Silas Allred (Muncie, Ind./CIA Wrestling Academy) left no doubt on who should represent Team USA at 92 kg in Morelia, Mexico. He won both styles, using a double leg right into four leg laces to tech fall Cael Valencia (Pico Rivera, Calif./Sunkist Kids Monster Garage), in the freestyle finals.

On the Junior side of things, Fresno State commit Jace Luchau (Selma, Calif./SOTA) was pushed in the finals by Matt Lee (Evansville, Ind./MCWC) but prevailed with two pushouts to win 2-1 in the 70 kg final.
Kyle Mosher (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Unattached) made easy work of the 74 kg bracket where he outscored his opponents 46-2.
Wyatt Hendrickson (Newton, Kan./Newton) needed just 26 seconds to tech. fall his opponent in the final round of the 97 kg round robin and secure the FloNationals title. The Kansas standout has committed to attend Air Force upon the completion of his high school career.
