10 athletes took the first steps to making the 2019 Cadet Pan American Team when they won Greco-Roman FloNationals titles.
The top eight place winners all received points toward making the Cadet Pan American Team, which will be determined at the conclusion of Cadet men’s freestyle on Saturday, and finalists earned separation criteria for the Cadet World Team Trials in Akron, Ohio, May 31 – June 2.
Daniel Sheen (St. Charles, Ill./Izzy Style) was able to take out last year’s U15 Pan American gold medalist in both Greco-Roman and freestyle using three takedowns and one trap arm gut to win by 8-5 decision in the 45 kg/99.2 lbs. final.
Jacob Rundell (Oak Park, Ill./TWA) capped off an impressive day with a 10-1 technical fall over 2018 Cadet Pan American gold medalist Sheldon Seymour (Troy, Penn./X Calibur). In four matches, the Illinois native picked up three technical falls and only gave up two points.
Fargo Greco-Roman champion, Haiden Drury (Zillah, Wash./Takedown Express Wrestling Club) wrestled extremely sound and to accord with his No. 1 seed in the 60 kg/132.2 lbs. finals. He used a four point head-pinch throw and variety of other one and two-point scores to defeat Indiana state champion Jesse Mendez (Crown Point, Ind./BPWC).
Samuel Fisher (Marshvall, Virg./Birds of Prey Wrestling Club) arguably had the best tournament of the day. The Virginia Tech commit tech. falled his way through what some considered to be the toughest bracket of the tournament, 92 kg/202.8 lbs. Fisher defeated 2018 Greco-Roman Fargo All-Americans in both the semifinals and finals.
At 110 kg/242.5 lbs., Braxton Mikesell (Spokane, Wash./INWTC) needed a combined 58 total seconds in his two matches to defeat his opponents. In a match between last year’s Cadet Greco-Roman Fargo 220 lbs. champion, Mikesell, and third place finisher, Nathaniel Deasey (Chandler, Ariz./Sunkist Kids WC), Mikesell used a head-pinch four-point throw and two consecutive gator rolls to complete the 23 second tech. fall.
Wrestling will get back underway tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. ET with Cadet Men’s Freestyle and Junior Men's Freestyle. Those wanting to watch, can stream the event live on FloWrestling.org.
