Spenser Mango (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) has been named 2018 Greco-Roman Coach of the Year by USA Wrestling. It is the first time in his career that Mango has won this prestigious honor.

Mango received the award at the Kickoff Party, organized by Jordan and Lauren Burroughs, in Pittsburgh, Pa. on March 20

Mango served as a 2018 U.S. World Team Coach, helping lead the USA team in Budapest, Hungary. The USA was led by World silver medalist Adam Coon, and seventh-place finisher Kamal Bey. The team finished 17th in the team standings.

Mango serves as a coach with the U.S. Army WCAP program, stationed in Fort Carson, Colo. The U.S. Army placed six athletes on the 2018-19 Greco-Roman National Team (which includes the top three in each weight class), including 2018 U.S. World Team member Ellis Coleman at 67 kg.

The U.S. Army WCAP is traditionally one of the most successful teams on the Senior level in Greco-Roman, with numerous U.S. Open All-Americans. In 2018, the U.S. Army had three U.S. Open champions, Coleman, plus Max Nowry at 55 kg and Ryan Mango at 63 kg.

In 2018, the U.S. Army won the Armed Forces Championships team title, after winning both the Greco-Roman and freestyle competitions against three other branches of the U.S. Military. The Army had six individual champions in Greco-Roman in 2018, and eight individual champions in freestyle.

Mango was one of the greatest Greco-Roman athletes to compete for the U.S. Army WCAP program before retiring after the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials to become a coach. Mango competed in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China and the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England. He also wrestled on six straight U.S. Senior World Teams (2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015), giving him eight straight years as the No. 1 athlete in the USA at his weight class.

His top placement at a World Championships was fifth in 2013 and 2014. Mango claimed seven U.S. Open titles. On the age-group levels, Mango was a 2007 University World champion and a 2006 Junior World bronze medalist.

Mango was a graduate of the University of Northern Michigan, where he competed on its U.S. Olympic Education Program Greco-Roman team. Originally from St. Louis, Mo., Mango won two state titles for Christian Brothers College High School, and was successful in Greco-Roman in USA Wrestling age-group program.

Mango holds a rank of Staff Sergeant with the U.S. Army.
