BUDAPEST, Hungary – Ellis Coleman wrapped up his 2018 World Championships on Saturday morning in Budapest, Hungary.
Coleman competed in the 67 kg repechage this morning, looking for a chance to wrestle for bronze.
In his first and only bout of the day, Coleman faced Mamadassa Sylla of France, who took fifth at the 2016 World Championships and recently finished with bronze at the 2018 World Military Championships.
Coleman held a 3-0 lead at the break, scoring on Sylla penalties, including passivity and a caution and two for fleeing. In the second period, Sylla got a chance on top, where he scored two gut wrenches and held on for a 5-3 win.
“Just like my other matches, I was grinding on my feet, pummelling, hand fighting. I tried to push the pace and get the first passivity call and par terre from there. Pretty much, all of these matches are in par terre,” said Coleman.
When asked about what will be needed to get to the next level, Coleman had an honest assessment.
“For me, it is clearly par terre. In the match with the Russia, and with the French guy, I was winning both matches. In the first period, I was winning both matches. I have to finish these matches in par terre. I had the opportunity on top in both matches to turn him, and I had the opportunity in both matches to defend. I lost in both of those situations. I have to win those situtions,” said Coleman.
This marks Coleman’s third World Championships as he represented the U.S. in 2013, 2017 and 2018. He was also a 2012 Olympian. He was a two-time Junior World bronze medals. A native of Oak Park, Ill., he is with the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program.
The final medal matches have been set in the four weight classes in the second group of Greco-Roman wrestlers.
It will be a battle of World champions at 87 kg as 2015 World champion and 2016 Olympic silver medalist Zhan Beleniuk of Ukraine will battle 2017 World champion Metehan Basar of Turkey.
2016 Olympic champion and 2014 World champion Davor Stefanek of Serbia will battle two-time World bronze medalist Artem Surkov of Russia.
At 60 kg, 2012 Junior World silver medalist Victor Ciobanu of Moldova and 2017 U23 World silver medalist Sergey Emelin of Russia will go for the gold.
Ciobanu is a 2012 Junior World silver medalist and 2016 University World bronze winner, while Emelin took second at the 2017 U23 World Championships and also owns a 2014 Junior World bronze.
