Snyder qualifies for men’s freestyle World semifinals; Green’s eliminated after second-round loss

BUDAPEST, Hungary – 2016 Olympic champion and two-time World champion Kyle Snyder (Columbus, Ohio/Titan Mercury WC/Ohio RTC) has advanced to Monday night’s semifinals at 97 kg/213.75 lbs. after three wins in the morning session at the Papp Laszlo Arena.
Snyder won his quarterfinals bout against Abraham De Jesus Conyedo Ruano of Italy, 11-2. At one point in the first period, the score was tied at 2-2, but Snyder scored nine unanswered points for the dominating performance. He led 7-2 at the break and added two more second-period takedowns to ice the victory.
Conyedo competed for Cuba early in his career, winning a Youth Olympic Games silver medal and Pan Am Senior silver medal before showing up on Team Italy in 2018.
Snyder opened with an 8-3 win over Baasanjargal Ulziisaikhan of Mongolia, getting a little bit of a slow start. At one point, Ulziisaikhan scored a takedown to take a 3-1 lead, but Snyder powered back with seven straight points, including three takedowns and a stepout.
His second match was over in just 28 seconds, as Snyder took down Nathaniel Tuifao Tuamoheloa of American Samoa and quickly turned him four times to secure the 10-0 technical fall.
Snyder will face two-time World bronze medalist Pavlo Oliinyk of host Hungary in the semifinals. Oliinyk competed most of his career for Ukraine.
In addition to his gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Snyder has also won two World Championship gold medals (2015, 2017). Snyder also has won a Junior World title and a Junior World bronze medal. A three-time NCAA champion and four-time finalist for Ohio State, he hails from Woodbine, Md.
At 70 kg/154 lbs., two-time World medalist James Green (Lincoln, Neb./Titan Mercury WC/Nebraska WTC) was defeated in his second match. When his opponent was defeated in the quarterfinals, Green was knocked out of the tournament and not eligible for repechage.
Green opened up with a tight 6-5 win over 2018 Junior World champion Khadzimurad Gadzhiyev of Azerbaijan in the first round. The first period ended up 2-2, as both athletes scored a takedown. In the second period, a Green takedown and ankle lace made it 6-2. Gadzhiyev score a takedown and forced a stepout to close the gap to one point, but Green closed it down in the final seconds for the win.
In the second round, Green was beaten by Byambadorj Bat Erdene of Mongolia, 4-2, when the Mongolian scored a takedown with 10 seconds left in the match. Bat Erdene led 2-0 at the break after scoring a takedown, but Green responded with his own takedown in the second period to make it 2-2. Green was ahead on criteria when he surrendered the winning move by Bat Erdene.
In the quarterfinals, Bat Erdene was defeated by 2015 World champion Magomedrasul Gazimagomedov of Russia, 5-0. Bat Erdene needed to reach the gold-medal finals in order to pull Green back into the tournament.
Green won a World silver medal in 2017 and a World bronze medal in 2015. He was also a member of the 2016 U.S. World Team. He was a silver medalist at the 2014 University World Championships. A four-time All-American for Nebraska, Green is from Willingboro, N.J.
Also included in the morning session were repechage rounds for the four weight classes which were part of the second group of men’s freestyle weight classes (57 kg, 65 kg, 79 kg, 92 kg).
At 57 kg, the bronze-medal opponent for Thomas Gilman (Iowa City, Iowa/Titan Mercury WC/Hawkeye WC) was determined in the repechage action. Gilman will face Suleyman Atli of Turkey in the bronze-medal round.
