Winchester qualifies for women’s semifinals at 55 kg, Burkert drops opener but still alive for repechage

BUDAPEST, Hungary - Jacarra Winchester (Colorado Springs, Colo./Titan Mercury WC/OTC) got the U.S. team to a strong start by qualifying for the 55 kg/121 lbs. semifinals during the first session of women’s freestyle wrestling at the World Wrestling Championships at the Papp Laszlo Arena.
Winchester won two matches to advance to the semifinals, where she will battle 2012 World silver medalist Zalina Sidakova of Belarus.
In the quarterfinals, Winchester scored early and emerged with a hard-fought 4-2 win over 2015 World bronze medalist Tetyana Kit of Ukraine. Winchester put up a pair of first-period takedowns to lead at the break, 4-0. In the second period, Kit hit an arm throw for two points and put Winchester onto her back. Winchester battled out of danger and controlled the final portion of the match to secure the win.
Winchester came out strong in her first Senior World match with a 12-1 technical fall over 2018 University World champion Ramona Galambos of host Hungary. She opened up her offense in the first period, with four takedowns and a turn for a 10-1 lead, the closed it out in the second period.
Winchester is competing in her first Senior World Championships. She has made four U.S. Senior National Teams. Winchester won a bronze medal at the World University Championships. She was a WCWA national champion for Missouri Valley College, and hails from Castro Valley, Calif.
At 59 kg/130 lbs., Jenna Burkert (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) lost a close 1-1 criteria decision to 2014 Asian silver medalist Shoovdor Baatarjav of Mongolia in her first match.
Neither athlete was able to score any technical moves, with both points coming when their opponent was put on the shot clock. Burkert got the point in the first period when Baatarjav was penalized. In the second period, officials put Burkert on the shot clock and she could not score. Baatarjav won the criteria by having scored the final point of the match.
Shoovdor was able to secure a 10-0 technical fall win over Sarita of India in the quarterfinals. Shoovdor must win her semifinals match against Elif Jale Yesilirmak of Turkey for Burkert to be pulled back into the repechage on Tuesday morning.
Burkert compete in her second Senior World Championships, after also wrestling in the 2014 World Championships in Uzbekistan. She also competed on three U.S. Junior World Teams, and placed fifth at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games. Burkert was on the women’s team at the Northern Michigan Olympic Training Site in high school and the start of college. A member of the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program, she is originally from Rocky Point, N.Y.
The semifinals, which includes two women’s weights and two men’s weights, begins at 4:45 p.m. in Budapest, which is six hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time zone. The World Championships are broadcast live in the USA on TrackWrestling.
