Burroughs, Gwiazdowski qualify for bronze-medal bouts; USA to compete for four medals Sunday night

BUDAPEST, Hungary – By winning their repechage matches, 2012 Olympic champion and four-time World champion Jordan Burroughs (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids/Nebraska WTC) at 74 kg/163 lbs. and 2017 World bronze medalist Nick Gwiazdowski (Raleigh, N.C./Titan Mercury WC/Wolfpack RTC) at 125 kg/275 lbs. qualified for a bronze-medal match on Sunday night in their weight class.
Burroughs secured a 9-0 victory over Miroslav Kirov of Bulgaria in his repechage match. Burroughs forced a pair of first-period stepouts to lead 2-0 at the break. In the second period, he added a takedown, two gut wrenches and a stepout to seal the dominant win.
Burroughs will face two-time World champion and Olympic bronze medalist Frank Chamizo of Italy in the bronze-medal match. Burroughs and Chamizo have met twice this season, splitting their bouts. Burroughs beat Chamizo 8-5 at the Beat the Streets Benefit in New York City in May. Chamizo beat Burroughs in a 10-10 criteria decision in the finals of the Yasar Dogu International in Turkey in July.
Gwiazdowski was in control on the way to a 7-0 victory over 2014 Junior World champion Amar Dhesi of Canada. Gwiazdowski set the tone in the first period, scoring two takedowns and receiving a point from a shot clock violation by Dhesi, to take a 5-0 lead at the break. Gwiazdowski added a crotch lift turn in the second period for his final two points. Dhesi was a Div. I All-American for Oregon State
Gwiazdowski will battle Sumit of India in the bronze-medal match on Sunday night. Sumit was a 2018 Commonwealth Games champion and a 2017 Asian Senior silver medalist.

With the repechage wins, the U.S. will now have four wrestlers going for medals from the first group of athletes, as David Taylor (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) will compete in a gold-medal match at 86 kg/189 lbs. and Joe Colon (Fresno, Calif./Titan Mercury WC/Valley RTC) will compete in a bronze-medal match at 61 kg/134 lbs.
Colon’s opponent in his bronze-medal match was determined in the repechage, as Mohammedbagher Yakhkeshi of Iran won his match over Ivan Guidea of Romania to qualify for the bronze-medal round. Yakhkeshi was a champion at the 2018 Yasar Dogu International in Turkey.
Taylor, the No. 2 seed, is the other U.S. competitor competing tonight, going for the gold-medal against No. 1 seed Fatih Erdin of Turkey. Erdin was second in the 2018 Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix.
The finals are set for 7:00 p.m. in Budapest. (It follows the 5:45 p.m. semifinals from Group 2). All of the action is live on TrackWrestling.com. Budapest is six hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time.
