U.S. wrestlers receive draws for Youth Olympic Games action on Saturday and Sunday

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - The draw for wrestling was conducted for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games on Friday, and the opponents for the four wrestlers from the United States have been determined. Competition is being held
The competition begins on Friday, October 12 with Greco-Roman, but the United States does not have any athletes qualified in that discipline.
On Saturday, October 13, the USA will enter Emily Shilson of Maple Grove, Minn. at 43 kg/94.5 lbs; and Tiare Ikei of Honolulu, Hawaii at 49 kg/108 lbs. in the women’s freestyle competition.
Shilson, a 2018 Cadet World champion, has drawn into Group B at 43 kg, and will have four Group B pool matches in the opening session. Included in her pool matches is a rematch with Shahana Nazarova of Azerbaijan, who Shilson defeated in the 2018 Cadet World Championships finals after trailing early in the bout. Nazarova was also a 2017 Cadet World champion.
Shilson’s other pool opponents include 2018 European Cadet bronze medalist Justine Vigouroux of France, 2018 Pan American Cadet silver medalist Heloisa Martinez of Brazil and 2018 Youth African Games champion Christianah Ogansanya of Nigeria.
Ikei, who won a 2018 Cadet World bronze medal, has drawn into Group A at 49 kg, and also must face four opponents in her preliminary action. Included in her pool draw is 2018 Cadet World bronze medalist Natalia Varakina of Belarus. Her other opponents include 2018 Cadet Pan American silver medalist Maria Mosquera Rojas of Venezuela, 2018 Asian Cadet silver medalist Shokina Akhmedova of Uzbekistan and 2018 Asian Cadet bronze medalist Nilufar Raimova of Kazakhstan.
On Sunday, October 14, Team USA will be represented by Robert Howard of Cranford, N.J. at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Carson Manville of Kingston, Pa. at 65 kg/143 lbs.
Howard, a two-time U.S. Cadet World Team member, has drawn into Group B at 55 kg, where he has two matches. He opens against 2018 Cadet World silver medalist Hayato Fujita of Japan, then must battle 2017 Cadet World bronze medalist Vladyslav Ostapenko of Ukraine.
Manville, a 2018 U.S. Cadet World Team member, will be in Group B at 65 kg and also has two pool bouts. He opens with 2018 African Cadet champion Fathi Tarek Fathi Attia Ismail of Egypt, then will compete against 2018 Cadet World bronze medalist Mohammad Baghi Karimiseifabad of Iran.
The results from the pool competition for each athlete will determine if the U.S. athletes will have an opportunity to compete for a medal.
The tournament is being held in Buenos Aires’ Asian Pavillion, with preliminaries set for 10:00 a.m. each day, followed by a medal-match round at 5:00 p.m. local time. Buenos Aires is one hour ahead of U.S. Eastern time zone.

The U.S. wrestling team is coached by Sam Barber of Colorado Springs, Colo., who is currently the head wrestling coach at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Seven U.S. wrestlers have competed in the previous two Youth Olympic Games, with four athletes winning silver medals in the Olympic styles. At the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, silver medals were won by Mason Manville (Greco-Roman 69 kg), Cade Olivas (men’s freestyle 46 kg) and Daton Fix (men’s freestyle 54 kg). At the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China, claiming a silver medal was Jordan Rogers (men’s freestyle, 76 kg). Also at the 2010 Youth Olympics, Jenna Burkert won a bronze medal in the YOG Beach Wrestling tournament.
