United World Wrestling notified the National Federations today that the top four seeds for the 2018 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary have been finalized. These athletes were the top four in the standings in each weight class from the UWW Ranking Series events held this year.

There are 11 U.S. wrestlers who completed the year in the top four of their weight class in the Ranking Series, of which nine are members of the 2018 U.S. Senior World Team for Budapest.

Two U.S. wrestlers have guaranteed themselves No. 1 seeds: Sarah Hildebrandt at 53 kg in women’s freestyle and Nick Gwiazdowski at 125 kg in men’s freestyle.

Sitting at No. 2 going into Budapest are Thomas Gilman (57 kg, men’s freestyle), David Taylor (86 kg, men’s freestyle), Forrest Molinari (65 kg, women’s freestyle), Tamyra Mensah (68 kg, women’s freestyle) and Adeline Gray (76 kg, women’s freestyle).

The lone American at No. 3 is Whitney Conder at 50 kg in women’s freestyle. Finishing with the No. 4 seed is Kyle Dake at 79 kg in men’s freestyle.

The two U.S. athletes who did not win Final X and did not make the U.S. World team, but appear in the seeds are Joe Colon (No. 4 at 61 kg in men’s freestyle) and Kayla Miracle (No. 2 at 62 kg at 62 kg).

The USA does not have any Greco-Roman wrestlers who appear in the top four of their weight class.

These published seeds do not mean that they will actually receive this seed at the World Championships.

Seeds are for the individual athlete, not for the country. Any athlete who does not enter the World Championships loses his/her seed. If the athlete competes in a different weight class, that athlete is not seeded.

In a weight where one or more athletes do not enter, the remaining seeded athletes move up in position to assume the higher seed. No athlete outside of the top four will move up to replace an empty position. Therefore, it is possible a weight class could have four seeds, three seeds, two seeds, one seed or none at all.

The seeded athletes will be placed in the bracket in a similar way that seeds are often placed in folkstyle wrestling in the USA. The top seed sits at the top of the upper bracket. The No. 2 seed is at the bottom of the lower bracket. The No. 3 is at the top of the lower bracket. The No. 4 is at the bottom of the upper bracket.

Except for seeded wrestlers, athletes will be paired based upon the number they draw randomly.
