USA Wrestling extends record for World medals in a year with 36

BUCHAREST, Romania – On Thursday night, when two U.S. women won medals at the 2018 U23 World Championships in Bucharest, Romania, USA Wrestling set a new record with 33 World medals across all age groups in a single year.

Since then, three men’s freestylers medaled at the U23 World tournament, extending the record to 36 World medals. Among the men’s freestyle medalists were Sean Fausz, Kollin Moore and Youssif Hemida, who all won silver medals.

The previous record was 32 medals, which was set by the various U.S. World Teams in 2017.

At the U23 World Championships, five athletes won medals, including silvers from Fausz at 61 kg, Moore at 97 kg and Hemida at 125 kg in men’s freestyle and bronzes from women’s freestylers Alex Glaude at 68 kg and Kori Bullock at 76 kg.

This year, the USA claimed eight World gold medals, including Senior champions Adeline Gray at 76 kg in women’s freestyle, Kyle Dake at 79 kg, David Taylor at 86 kg and J’den Cox at 92 kg in men’s freestyle, Junior champion Mekhi Lewis at 74 kg in men’s freestyle, Cadet champions Emily Shilson at 43 kg and Macey Kilty at 69 kg in women’s freestyle and Matthew Ramos at 51 kg in men’s freestyle.

Across all age groups, the USA also boasts 12 silver medals (eight MFS, two GR, two WFS) and 16 bronze medals (eight MFS, two GR, six WFS).

Women – Adeline Gray (gold, 76 kg), Sarah Hildebrandt (silver, 53 kg), Tamyra Mensah-Stock (bronze, 68 kg), Mallory Velte (bronze, 62 kg)

U23 – 5 medals
Freestyle – Sean Fausz (silver, 61 kg), Kollin Moore (silver, 97 kg), Youssif Hemida (silver, 125 kg)
Women – Alex Glaude (bronze, 68 kg), Korinahe Bullock (bronze, 76 kg)

Junior – 8 medals
