BUCHAREST, Romania – Jack Mueller advanced to the bronze-medal match at 57 kg, defeating Alireza Sarlak of Iran with a 16-15 decision in Saturday morning’s repechage of the U23 World Championships in Bucharest, Romania.

Points were flying from both wrestlers since the beginning of the match. Both Mueller and Sarlak each picked up two takedowns in the first period, but it was Mueller, who led at the break, 6-4.

The second period saw 21 points put on the board between both wrestlers, including a four-point takedown from Mueller to give himself an edge. Sarlak rattled off three takedowns in the final minute, but Mueller held off the Iranian for a 16-15 decision.

In tonight’s bronze-medal match, Mueller, representing the University of Virginia, will take on Wanhao Zhou of China, who took fifth at last year’s U23 World Championships.

Joining him in tonight’s medal matches is 97 kg finalist Kollin Moore, who will battle for gold against Givi Matcharashvili of Georgia.

The finals begin at 6 p.m. local time (11 a.m. ET) live on Trackwrestling.com.
