WCWA released its preseason rankings, with Wayland Baptist opening at No. 1

The WCWA, which oversees women’s college wrestling in the United States, released its preseason rankings for the 2018-19 season on October 23.
Wayland Baptist University in Texas led the team rankings at No. 1 with 91 points. Last season, Wayland Baptist was eighth at the WCWA National Championships, held in Oklahoma City on Feb. 9-10, 2018.
In a tie for No. 2 in the team rankings were 2018 WCWA national champions Campbellsville University (Ky.) and Emmanuel College (Ga.), with 60 points. Emmanuel was fourth in the 2018 WCWA Nationals.
Taking No. 4 in the rankings was Menlo College (Calif.) with 55 points, followed by 2018 WCWA runners-up Simon Fraser University (B.C., Canada) at No. 5 with 54 points.
Rounding out the top 10 were No. 6 McKendree (Ill.), No. 7 King (Tenn.), No. 8 Southern Oregon, No. 9 Univ. of Providence (Mont.) and No. 10 Oklahoma City Univ.
Individual rankings were also published in the 10 WCWA weight classes.
Returning WCWA national champions with No. 1 rankings include Dominique Parrish of Simon Fraser (123), Brittany Marshall of Wayland Baptist (170) and Paige Baynes of Wayland Baptist (191). Last year, Baynes won her WCWA title at Grays Harbor.
WCWA runners-up who are No. 1 ranked in the preseason include Maria Vidales of Emmanuel College (109), Nicole Depa of Simon Fraser (130), Alexis Porter of McKendree (143) and Tatum Sparks of the Univ. of Providence (155).
Also ranked No. 1 are Asia Ray of Wayland Baptist (101), Gabriela Ramos-Diaz of Wayland Baptist (116) and Nicole Joseph of King (136).
Women’s college wrestling is contested in freestyle, the international style of the sport. The preseason ranking did not include any freshmen athletes, nor any of the new teams which have joined the WCWA this season.
The women’s college season began in early October, and most teams have competed in some dual meets and tournaments already this year.
