Seven repeat as champions at USMC Girls Folkstyle Nationals in the youth divisions

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - A strong turnout of 295 girls entered the final day of the U.S. Marine Corps Girls Folkstyle Nationals in the three youth divisions, providing outstanding competition at the Cox Convention Center.
Seven wrestlers who won USMC Girls Folkstyle National titles in 2017 in the youth divisions were able to return this year and claim national titles again this year.
A pair of Schoolgirl champions were repeat winners, Rayanne Bayne of Pennsylvania, representing the Oklahoma National Team at 101 pounds, and California native Lillian Freitas of Pitman WC at 136 pounds.
Bayne defeated Israel Resendez of Daughters of Zion (CO) in the finals, 4-3. Last year, she was a Schoolgirl 81 pound champion.
Freitas won a five athlete-round robin, scoring four straight pins on the way to her repeat title. Last year, she was a champion at 120 pounds in the Schoolgirl division.
Five of the repeat champions were from the Novice division: Reanah Utterback of the Eddyville Rockets of Iowa (75), Alexis Segura of the Daughters of Zion of Colorado (85), Lauren Walton of the Carr Academy of Kentucky (95), Shayla Gallegos of the Daughters of Zion of Colorado (110) and Faith Tarrant of the Daughters of Zion of Colorado (118+)
Utterback scored a pin in her gold-medal match over Kira Cole of Ohio in 3:21. She was a Kids Div. II champion last year at 60 pounds.
Segura won a 6-0 finals bout over Alexis Dunwiddie of the Purler WC of Missouri in the finals. She won the Kids Div. II title last year at 75 kg.
Walton had a major decision in her championship finals, beating another 2017 Folkstyle nationals champion Skylur Lewis of the Springdale Youth of Arkansas, 13-1. Walton won her Kids Div. II title last year at 85 pounds.
Gallegos won a four athlete round-robin, scoring bonus points in all three of her victories. She was a Kids Div. II champion at 110 last season.
Tarrant had a finals major decision over Cristen Martinez of New Mexico, 15-6. She also won at 110 pounds last year in Kids Div. II.
Among the national champions was Gigi Bragg of the Pinnacle WC of Minnesota, who won at Novice 60 pounds. Bragg has sung the national anthem at this event many years, and gave a stirring rendition again this year before the start of the tournament this morning.
