The 2018 Bill Farrell Memorial International will be held at the New York Athletic Club in New York City on March 30-31, with all the action being streamed live on Flowrestling.
This event, named in honor of the late Bill Farrell, former NYAC Wrestling Chairman and 1972 Olympic Coach, continues to be one of the premier international competitions held in the United States.
Top U.S. athletes, as well as competitors from many other nations, traditionally enter this prestigious event, which has been held for more than 50 years by the New York Athletic Club. It features competition in all three Olympic disciplines, men’s freestyle, women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman.
This year’s Bill Farrell International has been extended to include the 10 new international World Championships weight classes in each style.
This year’s event is part of the U.S. World Team qualifying process in all three styles.
In Greco-Roman, the highest placed U.S. Greco-Roman medalist at the Bill Farrell Memorial in each weight class who has yet to qualify for the 2018 Greco-Roman World Team Trials in Tulsa, Okla. will advance to that event, set for June 20-21.
In men’s and women’s freestyle, it is a preliminary qualifier for the Final X Series. In both styles, the highest placed U.S. medalist who has yet to qualify for the 2018 World Team Trials Challenge Tournament in Rochester, Minn. will advance to that event, set for May 18-20. The World Team Trials Challenge Tournament ultimately determines one athlete in each weight class who qualifies for the Final X Series events in June.
This will be the first time in recent years that the Bill Farrell Memorial International will be held in the spring, after traditionally being held in either November or December.
The most recent Bill Farrell Memorial International was held in November 2016, and included only the six Olympic weight classes in each style.
In 2016, the United States swept all six of the gold medals in men’s freestyle. Champions were Alex Dieringer (Stillwater, Okla./ Titan Mercury WC), Nico Megaludis (State College, Pa./Titan Mercury WC), B.J. Futrell (Philadelphia, Pa./Titan Mercury WC), Austin Trotman (Lincoln, Neb./Titan Mercury WC), Dustin Kilgore (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) and Anthony Nelson (USA/Minnesota Storm). All won the Bill Farrell International for the first time.
Other Americans to win gold in 2016 included women’s freestylers Victoria Anthony (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids), Becka Leathers (Choctaw, Okla./Titan Mercury WC) and Adeline Gray (Kingston, Pa./ New York AC). U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers to win Bill Farrell golds in 2016 included Kamal Bey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) and G’Angelo Hancock (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids).
All participating athletes must have a valid UWW License, which must be purchased in advance and can not be purchased on site. Athletes who wish to purchase the UWW License through USA Wrestling must provide the necessary documents to Jaimie McNab of USA Wrestling by tomorrow (Friday, March 23). See the official website for more details.
The deadline for online registration is Wednesday, March 28 at 7:00 p.m. Eastern time. On site registration is available, but at an increased entry fee.
