EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan faithful have reason to cheer with returning Big Ten finalist Logan Massa apparently back to his title-contending form.

The Wolverine sophomore brought the Breslin Center to life after securing the biggest win of the morning session at the Big Ten Championships. Massa scrambled his way through a sudden-victory takedown to deliver Iowa's Alex Marinelli the first official loss of his young Hawkeye career.

Following a critical last-second takedown in regulation, momentum was trending Marinelli's direction heading into overtime. Marinelli navigated to a standing single-leg position early in sudden victory and appeared to have the match all but won. In an act of desperation, Massa dove for the ankles, transitioned Marinelli's attack into his own offense, and snatched a takedown to clinch the bout, 8-6.

"He caught me flat-footed, got in on my leg - a couple times at the end of the match I was flat-footed - and he got me there," Massa said. "But I know he can't scramble with me. All he wants to do is push and wrestle hard, and when I get him moving around, I know I'm better in every position than him and I'll score in those scrambles every time."

Purdue's Christian Brunner was the second surprise semifinalist of the day after he handed Midlands champion Cash Wilcke of Iowa an 8-2 defeat. Brunner entered as the No. 6 seed at 197 pounds to Wilcke's No. 3 seed.

Massa and Brunner are the only competitors seeded outside of the top five to qualify for tonight's semifinal session set to begin at 6 p.m. (ET).

No. 5 seeds Ethan Lizak of Minnesota, Nate Limmex of Purdue, Ke-Shawn Hayes of Ohio State and Johnny Sebastian of Northwestern pulled off mild upsets over their No. 4 counterparts in the quarterfinals.

The top three seeds in every weight class have advanced to the semifinals, including defending Big Ten and NCAA champion Jason Nolf of Penn State whose competitive status was up in the air after sustaining a severe knee injury last month against Rutgers. Nolf delivered two bonus-point wins as the No. 2 seed at 157 pounds.

Defending Big Ten champion Ohio State holds a slight four-point edge over top-ranked Penn State in the team race. The Buckeyes pushed nine wrestlers to the semifinals, with 165-pounder Te'Shan Campbell the only team member to lose on Saturday morning. The Nittany Lions earned eight semifinal berths after suffering losses at 125 and 133.

Session II of the Big Ten Championships will feature the championship semifinals and two rounds of consolation matches. The action can be viewed live online on either BTN2GO.com or Flowrestling.com. Updated brackets can be found on Trackwrestling.com.
