ZAGREB, Croatia – Two U.S. wrestlers were pulled back into Sunday’s repechage in Greco-Roman competition of the 2018 Cadet World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia.
At 60 kg, Phillip Moomey dropped a 6-2 match to 2018 Cadet Asian silver medalist Shahin Badaghi Mofrad of Iran in the first bout. However, Moomey was pulled back into repechage when Badaghi Mofrad defeated Pravesh Pravesh of India in the semifinals, 6-1.
The American 60 kg wrestler will begin a journey for bronze tomorrow morning, taking on Vladislav Karasev of Russia in his first repechage match.
In his opening bout at 92 kg, Jacob Kaminski lost Aleksei Mileshin of Russia in a quick 9-0 tech fall.
Kaminski was given another opportunity to compete when Mileshin defeated 2018 Cadet European bronze medalist Richard Karelson of Estonia, 7-1, in the semifinals.
Kaminski will start to battle back tomorrow morning in repechage, facing 2017 Cadet European bronze medalist Davyd Samsonov of Ukraine.
The other three U.S. competitors wrapped up their 2018 World Championships on Saturday.
At 45 kg, Cale Anderson was knocked out of the competition after dropping a tech fall match to Khusankhon Yunuskhonov of Uzbekistan in the first round.
Yunuskhonov then lost his next match to Cadet European bronze medalist Ilias Iandarov of Russia, ultimately ending Anderson’s tournament.
51 kg wrestler for the U.S. Jakason Burks fell in a 9-3 match to Madiyar Maulitkahov of Kazakhstan, who was fifth at 2018 Cadet Asian Championships.
Maulitkahov dropped his following bout to 2018 Cadet Asian bronze Laishram Meitei of India to eliminate Burks’ chance at repechage.
James Burks had a back-and-forth match with Kyrgyzstan’s Zhenish Zhumabekov to open at 71 kg but fell on the short side of the result, losing a 10-5 decision.
Zhumabekov lost his next bout to Petar Gornyashki of Bulgaria, ending Burks’ 2018 Cadet World Championships.
Repechage action will begin Sunday at 4 p.m. local time (10 a.m. ET) live on Trackwrestling.com.
