ZAGREB, Croatia – Tiare Ikei, wrestling for the U.S. Cadet women’s freestyle World Team at 49 kg, advance to the bronze-medal match of the 2018 Cadet World Championships on Thursday morning in Zagreb, Croatia.
Ikei, who fell yesterday in the championship bracket to Russia’s Polina Lukina, was pulled back into repechage when the Russian advanced to the 49 kg finals last night.
In repechage action, Ikei only needed one win to get to the bronze match. She took on Aisha Kappar of Kazahstan, who took 17th at last year’s Cadet World Championships.
The 2018 Pan American champion Ikei got off to a fast start, leading 6-0 at the break. In the second period, she ended it quickly with a snap-down to a go-behind, followed by a tilt for a 10-0 tech fall.
Tonight, Ikei will face Munkhgerel Munkhbat of Mongolia for bronze.
Also wrestling for a medal tonight is 2017 Cadet World silver medalist Emily Shilson, who is wrestling for 43 kg gold after making her second-straight Cadet World finals.
The medal matches are set to begin Thursday at 6 p.m. local time (12 p.m. ET) live on Trackwrestling.com.
