by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
LEBANON, Ill. – The women’s Bearcat Open wrapped up on Saturday afternoon in Lebanon, Ill., with six different schools bringing home individual champions.
Host school McKendree University and second-ranked Campbellsville University each placed three athletes on the top of the podium, while Emmanuel College, Menlo College, Ottawa University and Oklahoma City University all gained one champion each.
Winners for No. 3 McKendree included Genae Sampract at 101 pounds, Megan Black at 130 pounds and Brandy Lowe at 191 pounds.
Sampract had a win by injury default in the finals over No. 2 Regina Doi of King University.
Black and Lowe both took on their teammates in all-McKendree finals.
U23 World Team member and top-ranked Megan Black notched a late fall over Alexia Ward, a 2016 All-American for McKendree.
Ranked No. 8 at 170 pounds, Lowe, a past WCWA national runner-up, bumped up to 191 pounds, where she faced fellow Bearcat and No. 5 Destane Garrick in a 5-2 decision.
There were two finals that pitted McKendree over Campbellsville with the Tigers taking the W in both.
At 123 pounds, Koral Sugiyama of Campbellsville, ranked No. 3 in the nation at 136 pounds, knocked off No.2 Brenda Reyna of McKendree in the finals, winning by fall in 5:13.
Three-time WCWA champion and U.S. National Team member Kayla Miracle of Campbellsville went up to 143 pounds for the tournament. There, she matched up with McKendree’s Alexis Porter, who is No. 2 in the country. Miracle took a 2-1 decision. Both wrestlers claimed bronze medals at the 2016 Junior World Championships.
Campbellsville’s other championship came from Norway native and 2017 Junior World bronze medalist Grace Bullen at 136 pounds. Bullen, ranked No. 3 at 130 pounds, defeated No. 6 SOlin Piearcy of Menlo College in a 10-0 tech fall.
Other individual titles came from two-time WCWA champion Cody Pfau of Emmanuel College at 109 pounds, freshman Tiana Jackson of Menlo at 116 pounds, Kendra Kahrli of Ottawa at 155 pounds and U23 World Team member and three-time Junior World Team member Rachel Watters of Oklahoma City University at 170 pounds.
