KLIPPAN, Sweden – The United States claimed three medals on the final day of the Cadet division at the Klippan Lady Open on Saturday morning.

Winning silver medals were Emily Shilson (Maple Grove, Minn./Titan Mercury WC) at 46 kg/ 101.4 lbs. and Macey Kilty (River Falls, Wis./World Gold WC) at 65 kg/ 143.3 lbs. Capturing a bronze medal was Kylie Welker (Franksville, Wis.) at 53 kg/ 116.8 lbs.

Shilson, a 2017 Cadet World silver medalist, was defeated in her finals bout by Yu Sakamoto of Japan, 8-2. She defeated Justine Vigouroux of France, 11-0, Miyu Nakanishi of Japan, 5-2 and Nelly Johansson of Sweden, 10-0, to reach the finals.

Kilty, a 2016 Cadet World bronze medalist, dropped her finals bout to 2017 Cadet World champion Honaka Nakai of Japan, 4-0. Kilty powered her way to the finals with four dominant wins, with two pins and two technical falls.

Welker, a 2017 Pan American Schoolgirl champion, scored a bronze medal with a 10-0 technical fall over 2017 Nordic Cadet champion Othelie Hoie of Norway. Welker finished with a 4-1 record in the tournament, scoring two pins and two technical falls herself.

All eight of the U.S. entries placed in the top 10 of their weight class. The United States placed third in the team standings with eight points, behind champion Japan with 36 points and runner-up Russia with 10 points. There were 22 national or club programs entered in the tournament.

“We brought eight Cadets and three were able to get on the podium. All eight battled for position throughout the weekend, and proved they can compete on an international stage. This experience will only add to their growth as they continue to pursue international success,” said U.S. coach Chad Shilson.
