DORTMUND, Germany - Two U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers are unbeaten and have qualified for the semifinals after the first session of the German Grand Prix on Saturday.

Competing in Saturday night’s semifinals are Max Nowry (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and 2018 World Team member Dalton Roberts, Fowlerville, Mich. (New York AC/NMU-OTS) at 60 kg/132 lbs.

Nowry was in a weight class with six entries, which was split into two pools. Nowry went 2-0 to win Pool A. The German Grand Prix is having a cross-bracketed semifinals, where the top two in each pool advanced.

Two U.S. wrestlers were in Pool A, Nowry and 2018 World Team member Sam Hazewinkel (Guthrie, Okla./Sunkist Kids). Hazewinkel went first, dropping a match to Fabian Schmitt of Germany, 10-2, while Nowry had a bye.

In the next round, Nowry secured a 3-0 decision over Hazewinkel. This was a reversal from the finals series of the 2018 Greco-Roman World Team Trials, which went to Hazewinkel. Nowry looked strong in the third round-robin match in Pool A, taking control in a 5-1 win over Schmitt to qualify for the semifinals.

In the semifinals, Nowry will face the runner-up in Pool B, Ayazci Dogus of Turkey, who was fifth in the 2018 Vehbi Emre International in Turkey.

Roberts had a bye in the first round, and came out strong in the quarterfinals, stopping Viktor Petryk of Ukraine, 6-0. Roberts had a strong first period where he took the commanding lead in the match. Petryk placed fifth in the 2018 U23 European Championships.

In the semifinals, Roberts has drawn Maxim Kazharski of Belarus, who was a 2007 World Military bronze medalist and has placed fifth in the Senior European Championships three times (2012, 2013, 2018).

The United States entered 11 athletes in the German Grand Prix, and all of the weight classes were started on Saturday morning. Included in the USA delegation were seven members of the 2018 U.S. Senior World Team, which is using the event as its tune-up tournament prior to the 2018 World Championships, set for Budapest, Hungary in October.

“The German Grand Prix is a very tough tournament. The U.S. athletes are competing hard. We are figuring out the adjustments we need to make,” said National Greco-Roman Coach Matt Lindland.

Nine U.S. wrestlers have lost a match, but four could still earn a spot in Saturday’s repechage if the wrestler they lost to can win their semifinal bout.

Dropping a quarterfinal bout at 63 kg/138.5 lbs. was 2016 Olympian and 2018 World Team member Jesse Thielke (Beresford, S.D /New York AC/Legends of Gold), who was edged by 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Stig Andre Berge of Norway, 3-2.

Thielke had an opening bye, and Berge won his preliminary bout. Thielke led 2-0 at the break, but in the second period, Berge got a point on passivity against Thielke, then was able to turn Thielke for the deciding two points. If Berge wins in the semifinals, Thielke gets pulled into repechage.

Winning his opening bout at 82 kg/180.5 lbs. was Geordan Speiller (Oviedo, Fla./Florida Jets) who scored a 2-2 criteria win over Petr Novak of the Czech Republic. Speiller trailed 2-0, but came back to tie it up and take the match.

Speiller was defeated in the quarterfinals by 2014 World champion and three-time Olympian Peter Bacsi of Hungary, 4-1. If Bacsi reaches the finals on Saturday night, Speiller would become eligible for repechage on Sunday morning.

2018 World Team member Patrick Martinez (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC/OTC) suffered an opening loss to Amer Hrustanovic of Austria, 5-1. Martinez, who will be on his third World Team in Budapest, would be drawn into repechage if Hrustanovic wins in the semifinals.

Also with a possibility of repechage is 2015 Junior World bronze medalist Taylor LaMont (Mapleton, Utah/Sunkist Kids), who was beaten in the quarterfinals by another 2015 Junior World bronze medalist, Erik Torba of Hungary, 7-1. If Torba wins his semifinal bout, LaMont gets pulled back into the tournament.

Eliminated with two losses was Hazewinkel. Other 2018 Senior World Team members who were eliminated with one loss and can not enter the repechage are Kamal Bey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids/OTC) at 77 kg/169.5 lbs. and Adam Coon (Ann Arbor, Mich./New York AC/Cliff Keen WC) at 130 kg/286 lbs.

Bey, a 2017 Junior World champion was edged in his opener, dropping a 5-5 criteria decision to Khalid Kerchiyev of Sweden. Bey was eliminated when Kerchiyev lost his next match, making Bey ineligible for repechage.

Coon, a 2014 Junior World bronze medalist who will be competing on his first Senior World team, fell in his opening match to Kiril Hryshchanka of Belarus, 5-1. Hryshchanka, who won silver medals at the 2011 Junior Worlds and 2016 University Worlds, was defeated in the next round, knocking out Coon.

Also eliminated with one loss are 2014 World Team member Joe Rau (Chicago, Ill./Minnesota Stom/Chicago RTC) at 87 kg/191.5 lbs. and Luke Sheridan (Colorado Springs/Colo. (U.S. Army WCAP) at 97 kg/213 lbs.

Rau lost to Aleksandar Stjepanetic of Sweden, 2-1 and Sheridan fell to Aliaksandr Hrabovic of Belarus, 5-0. Both of their opponents failed to reach the semifinals.

The semifinal round is set for Saturday at 6:30 p.m., which is six hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time.
