DORTMUND, Germany – A group of 12 U.S. Senior Greco-Roman stars have weighed in and received their first round draws for the Grand Prix of Germany, which begins on Saturday morning.

Included in the American contingent are eight members of the 2018 U.S. Senior World Team, which is using this tough international event as a tune-up for the World Championships in Hungary in October.

Included on the U.S. roster are two past Olympians, Sam Hazewinkel (Guthrie, Okla./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Jesse Thielke (Beresford, S.D/New York AC/Legends of Gold) at 63 kg/138.5 lbs.

Hazewinkel, a 2012 Olympian in freestyle, is in a six-athlete weight class, split into two pools. In his pool, he faces Fabian Schmitt of Germany and Max Nowry (Colorado Springs, Colo. (U.S. Army WCAP). Hazewinkel beat Nowry in the finals to make the 2018 World Team. Both Hazewinkel and Nowry are past University World champions.

Thielke, a 2016 Olympian, has a bye in round one, then will face the winner of the bout between Abdurakham Altan of Turkey and Stig-Andre Berge of Norway. Berge was a 2016 Olympic bronze medalist and 2014 World bronze medalist.

World Team member Patrick Martinez (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC/OTC) opens up his tournament at 87 kg/191.5 lbs. against Amer Hrustanovic of Austria, who was 10th in 2012 and 2016 Olympics. Martinez is on his third U.S. Senior World Team.

Right next to Martinez in the upper bracket is 2014 World Team member Joe Rau (Chicago, Ill./Minnesota Storm/Chicago RTC), who opens 2017 Nordic Junior champion Aleksandar Stjepanetic of Sweden. If both Martinez and Rau win their opening bouts, they face each other in the second round.

The USA has a pair of 2018 World Team members competing at 77 kg/169.5 lbs., Kamal Bey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids/OTC) and Jon Jay Chavez, Boise, Idaho (Finger Lakes WC). Chavez made the World team at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. and moved up in weight for the German Grand Prix.

Bey, a 2017 Junior World champion who is on his first Senior World Team, opens up with 2018 Grand Prix of Spain champion Khalid Kerchiyev of Sweden. Chavez, a past Cadet World medalist, drew Dawid Klimek of Poland, who was third in the 2016 U23 European Championships.
