by Koral Sugiyama, USA Wrestling
United World Wrestling announced its August 2018 Ranking Series Greco-Roman standings. Five U.S. wrestlers ranked in the top 20 of their weight class.
The American wrestlers who appear in the standings include National Team members Robbie Smith (No. 12 at 130 kg), Ryan Mango (No. 13 at 63 kg), Max Nowry (No. 16 at 55 kg), Ravaughn Perkins (No. 18 at 72 kg) and Ben Provisor (No. 18 at 87 kg).
United World Wrestling initiated an objective ranking system at the beginning of the 2018 season. The points acquired at continental championships and select rankings series determine the top four seeded athletes at the 2018 World Championships in October held in Budapest.
Domestic results go uncounted towards the UWW ranking standings. All five of the U.S. athletes in the UWW August ranking series placed second at the 2018 Greco-Roman World Team Trials in Tulsa, Okla., this past June.
Three countries produced two wrestlers in the No. 1 spot. Turkey holds 55 kg. with Ekrem Ozturk and 130 kg. with Riza Kaylaalp. Kyrgyzstan controls both 60 kg. and 63 kg. with Kanybek Zholchubekov and Urmatbek Amatov. Hungary kept two in the No. 1 spot at 72 kg. with Balint Korpasi and 97 kg. with Balazs Kiss.
Four other countries lead the remaining weight classes: Kazakhstan’s Almat Kebispayev at 67 kg, Belarus’s Kazbek Kilov at 77 kg, Bulgaria’s Daniel Aleksandrov at 82 kg. and Azerbaijan’s Islam Abbasov at 87 kgs.
