The U23 World Team Trials is a new event on the USA Wrestling schedule. The tournament will be held in all three disciplines at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester, Minn., October 6-8.
This is a new age group within United World Wrestling. Athletes who are between 19-23 years old can enter (Born 1994-1998), with 18-year-olds (Born 1999) able to compete with a medical and parental certificate.
Champions from the U23 World Team Trials earn the right to represent the United States at the new U23 World Championships, set for Bydgoszcz, Poland, November 21-26.
To clarify some questions which USA Wrestling has received, we wanted to provide some specific details at this time.
1. Championship Finals are a best-of-three series
As a World Team Trials event, the championship finals in each weight class will consist of best-of-three series, featuring the semifinals winners from the Trials Tournament, which is the preliminary competition during the morning session each day. No athletes will sit out of the Trials Tournament.
2. United World Wrestling bracketing system in place, with two bronze medals
The current United World Wrestling bracketing system will be employed for the U23 World Team Trials. That means that only athletes who lose to finalist will be eligible for the repechage (wrestle-backs). There will be two bronze medals awarded in each weight class based upon the repechage results, just like international tournaments are conducted in 2017. It is basically single elimination, with a limited repechage only for those who lose to a finalist. The repechage will be contested in the second session, alongside the Final Trials Series.
3. All weight classes will be seeded by coaches/leaders at seeding meeting
There will be a seeding meeting following weigh-in each day, where coaches and/or team leaders from clubs and RTCs will have an opportunity to seed the athletes entered. The number of seeds in each specific weight class will be determined by the coaches in attendance.
4. Online registration ends Tuesday, October 3 at 10 p.m. CT with onsite registration at higher cost available
Athletes can register for the U23 World Team Trials through Trackwrestling, with online registration closing on Tuesday, October 3 at 10:00 p.m. Central Standard Time.
