ATHENS, Greece – U.S. Cadet Greco-Roman wrestlers Dylan Ragusin, Mason Reiniche, Jake Hendricks and Ashton Sharp await tonight’s semifinals to find out if they will be pulled back into repechage of the 2017 Cadet World Championships in Athens, Greece.
Three-time Fargo champion Ragusin took out Mohammadhossein Abolhassanidarounkola of Iran in the first period with slick takedowns and a big four-pointer for an 11-2 tech fall to advance to the 46 kg/101 lbs. quarterfinals. There, he battled with Russia’s Anvar Allakhiarov, who ended the match in a fall in 3:27, pushing Ragusin out of the championship bracket.
At 85 kg/187 lbs., 2017 USA Wrestling Triple Crown winner Sharp won big in his first bout, defeating Israel’s Bagrati Iobidze, who was 19th at the 2017 Cadet European Championships. In the final minute of the bout, Sharp picked up a pair of four-pointers to put the match away. In the quarterfinals, he fell in a hard-fought 6-2 match against 2017 Cadet Nordic champion Juho Pahikainen of Finland.
Mason Reiniche was edged out by 2017 Cadet European bronze medalist Vladyslav Kravchenko of Ukraine to begin his tournament at 69 kg/152 lbs. Kravchenko soared to the semifinals with an 9-0 win in the quarterfinals to move Reinche past the first session.
At 76 kg/167 lbs., Jake Hendricks fell in his opening bout to 2017 Cadet European bronze medalist Istvan Takacs of Hungary, 6-0. Takacs went on to advance to the semifinals, keeping the American in the tournament.
Kase Mauger was not able to qualify for the medal round, after suffering a tough 8-0 loss to 2017 Cadet Asian silver medalist Yerraasyl Mamyrbekov of Kazakhstan in his first round at 42 kg/92 lbs. Mamyrbekov later lost in the quarterfinals, ending Mauger’s tournament.
The semifinals will begin at 5:30 p.m. local time (10:30 a.m. ET). USA’s Cohlton Schultz, who cruised through yesterday’s competition, will wrestle in the 100 kg/220 lbs. finals tonight at 6 p.m. (11 a.m. ET).
