Peters placed fifth at 70 kg on day one of Beach World Championships in Turkey

DALYAN, Turkey - Michael Peters of Quincy, Ill. (Road Dawgs WC) placed fifth at 70 kg on the first day of the Beach World Wrestling Championships on Friday.
Peters, who is a redshirt freshman at Div. II powerhouse Maryville University, opened with a pair of victories, beating Iurii Sergin of Russia, 3-1 and Front Are Andersen of Norway, 3-0.
In the semifinals, he lost to Mohammad Naderi of Iran, 3-0. Naderi was a two-time Beach World champion (2015 and 2016) and won a bronze medal at the 2016 Asian Senior Championships, as well as at the 2015 World Military Championships, both in freestyle wrestling.
Peters advanced to a bronze-medal match, where he was defeated by Veli Yantir of host Turkey, 4-2, and placed fifth.
There were 20 athletes in Peters’ weight class, representing 11 different countries.
Peters won the U.S. Beach National Championships in 2017 in Carolina Beach, N.C., which qualified him to compete at the Beach World Championships.
Peters was the only U.S. athlete to compete at the Beach Worlds on Friday. Two other U.S. wrestlers will compete on Friday, 2017 U.S. Beach Nationals champion Gabe Beauperthuy (Colorado Springs, Colo./Colorado USA Wrestling) in the unlimited weight class, along with Briar Runyan (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville Madmen WC) at 90 kg/198 lbs.
Rusty Davidson of the United States is the head official of the Beach World Championships. Davidson also serves on USA Wrestling’s Ad-Hoc Associated Styles Committee.
