Bey survives semifinal scare, Tomasello to face Fix as U23 World Team Trials finals set on Sunday

The championship finals series have been set for the USA Wrestling U23 World Team Trials at the Mayo Civic Center on Sunday, with all eight men’s freestyle weight classes and four Greco-Roman weight classes.
The winners of the semifinals on Sunday will face each other in a best-of-three series at the 3:30 p.m. session. This is the qualifying event in all three Olympic disciplines for the U23 World Championships, set for Bydgoszcz, Poland, November 21-26.
In Greco-Roman, 2017 Junior World champion Kamal Bey of the Sunkist Kids fell behind to former Iowa star Alex Meyer of the Hawkeye WC, 7-2 at 80 kg/176 lbs., but came back with two big throws for last minute 9-7 victory.
Bey scored a big five-point move to tie it at 7-7, then added a two-point toss to close out the come-from-behind win. Meyer is just starting his Greco-Roman career after completing his folkstyle career at Iowa. Bey, who is up one weight class from his normal 75 kg, will battle Thomas Brackett in the championship series.
“He obviously didn’t do his scouting right because he wasn’t wrestling. He was just fighting, trying to get good position. At the end of the day, I always come back. At the end, I got him and scored five points and was ahead on criteria. I hurt my thumb a little bit and my wrist, but it is OK. We have two more matches today to get it done,” said Bey.
In men’s freestyle, 2015 NCAA champion Nathan Tomasello of Ohio State will face 2017 Junior World champion Daton Fix of Oklahoma State in a highly-anticipated 57 kg/125.5 lbs. finals.
“It will be a good test. He’s a top level guy, which makes it even more exciting. I am pumped for the matchup. I am going to have to push the pace, shoot a lot and wear on him,” said Tomasello.
Tomasello, representing the Ohio RTC and Titan Mercury WC, scored a 10-0 technical fall over Tim Lambert of the Sunkist Kids in the semifinals.
Fix, an OSU freshman representing Cowboy RTC and Titan Mercury WC, beat former ND State star Joshua Rodriguez of the Nittany Lion WC, 8-3 in his semifinal.
“I am excited for it. I love wrestling the best. I love wrestling new people. It is going to be a blast out there. I am going to have to get to my offense in the match,” said Fix.
Two other past NCAA champions have earned spots in the men’s freestyle finals, 2016 NCAA champion Myles Martin of Ohio State and two-time NCAA champion Isaiah Martinez of Illinois.
Martin, also representing the Ohio RTC and Titan Mercury WC, defeated Jaron Smith of the Terrapin WC, 7-4 in the 86 kg/189 lbs. semifinals. In the finals series, he will face former Iowa star Sammy Brooks, who stopped 2017 NCAA runner-up Brett Pfarr of the Minnesota Storm, 4-0.
Martinez did not compete in the morning session, as there were only two entries at 74 kg/163 lbs. He will face Chance Marsteller of the Titan Mercury WC, a 2017 University Nationals champion, in the best-to-three Championship Series.
A pair of past Junior World silver medalists powered into the finals, 2017 Junior World silver medalist Mitchell McKee of the Minnesota Storm at 61 kg/134 lbs. and 2014 Junior World silver medalist Joey McKenna of the Lehigh Valley AC/TMWC at 65 kg/143 lbs. McKee wrestles for Minnesota, while McKenna is a senior transfer at Ohio State.
McKee will battle Isaac Jimenez of the Air Force RTC in his finals, while McKenna will face Oklahoma State’s
Boo Lewallen of Cowboy RTC and Titan Mercury WC for the title.
At 70 kg/154 lbs., Richard Lewis of the Scarlett Knight WC will face Nebraska star Tyler Berger of the Sunkist Kids in the finals. Going for the title at 97 kg/213 lbs. is Ty Walz of VT/Southeast RTC and Daniel Chaid of the Tarheel WC. The heavyweight finals pits Maryland big man Yousif Hemida of the Terrapin WC against Michael Kroells of the Minnesota Storm.
A pair of No. 1 seeds did not reach the finals, Anthony Collica of CRTC/TMWC at 70 kg/154 lbs. and Michael Kosoy of the Wolfpack WC at 125 kg/275 lbs. did not reach the finals in men’s freestyle.
In Greco-Roman, 2017 U.S. Senior World Team member G’Angelo Hancock of the New York AC, competing up one weight class, reached the finals 130 kg/286 lbs. after defeating Nicholas Boykin of Sunkist Kids, 7-2 in the semifinals. He will battle Alton Meeks of the Florida Jets, who beat past Junior World Team member Michael Rogers of NYAC/OTC in the semifinals, 7-4
Two other No. 1 Greco-Roman seeds reached the finals, Dalton Roberts of NYAC/NMU-OTS at 59 kg/130 lbs. and Colin Schubert of NYAC/NMU-OTS at 71 kg/156 lbs.
Roberts, a two-time Junior World team member, will face NMU-OTS teammate Randon Miranda, a 2017 Junior World Team member, in the finals. Schubert has drawn 2017 University Nationals champion Alex Mossing of the Air Force RTC in the championship series.
The finals will be broadcast live by TrackWrestling at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, with Shane Sparks and Jason Bryant on the call
