Record turnout for youth divisions at Beach Nationals, as two repeat as champions

CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. – The wrestling was exciting, and the weather was fantastic, but the biggest news at the 2017 USA Wrestling Beach National Championships was the large field of competitors this year.
It was a record turnout with a total of 206 entries in all divisions, in the fifth straight year that the growing event has been held in Carolina Beach. Included were 164 competitors in the youth divisions from pre-Bantam through Juniors.
It was a tough year for returning champions, as 12 of the 2016 Beach National champions in the youth divisions returned to compete again this year, but only two of them were able to win a national title for the second year in a row.
The Junior 182 weight class was loaded, with three returning champions in the four-athlete roundrobin. Troy Cain of the Iron Warriors WC, last year’s Junior champion at 181, emerged as a repeat champion. Placing second was Hunter Strickland of Combat, who was a Junior champion last year at 162, and taking third was Ryan Richardson, who was a Cadet 171 champion in 2016.
The other repeat champion was Elijah Harris of C2W Wrestling Academy, who captured the Schoolboy 104 title this year. Last year, Harris was a Beach National champion at the Novice 92 division. Harris was a co-champion as there were three athletes in his weight class who tied for first place, along with Bradley Parker of Strong and Courageous and Jt Richards of Combat Athletics.
For the first time, a team award, the Beach Cup, was given for the top club in the Youth divisions. Taking home the inaugural Beach Cup for the youth divisions was the ROBCO Wrestling Club, which is located in Roberson County in North Carolina. ROBCO had seven individual champions, plus numerous other medalists.

CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. – The wrestling was exciting, and the weather was fantastic, but the biggest news at the 2017 USA Wrestling Beach National Championships was the large field of competitors this year.
It was a record turnout with a total of 206 entries in all divisions, in the fifth straight year that the growing event has been held in Carolina Beach. Included were 164 competitors in the youth divisions from pre-Bantam through Juniors.
It was a tough year for returning champions, as 12 of the 2016 Beach National champions in the youth divisions returned to compete again this year, but only two of them were able to win a national title for the second year in a row.
The Junior 182 weight class was loaded, with three returning champions in the four-athlete roundrobin. Troy Cain of the Iron Warriors WC, last year’s Junior champion at 181, emerged as a repeat champion. Placing second was Hunter Strickland of Combat, who was a Junior champion last year at 162, and taking third was Ryan Richardson, who was a Cadet 171 champion in 2016.
The other repeat champion was Elijah Harris of C2W Wrestling Academy, who captured the Schoolboy 104 title this year. Last year, Harris was a Beach National champion at the Novice 92 division. Harris was a co-champion as there were three athletes in his weight class who tied for first place, along with Bradley Parker of Strong and Courageous and Jt Richards of Combat Athletics.
For the first time, a team award, the Beach Cup, was given for the top club in the Youth divisions. Taking home the inaugural Beach Cup for the youth divisions was the ROBCO Wrestling Club, which is located in Roberson County in North Carolina. ROBCO had seven individual champions, plus numerous other medalists.
