ROCHESTER, Minn. – The first day of the Last Chance World Team Trials Qualifier is in the books and four men’s freestyle athletes have booked their tickets to the U.S. World Team Trials set for Lincoln, Neb., June 9-10.
Wrestlers taking top prize in Rochester on Saturday, thus booking their trips to Lincoln, include Thomas Gilman at 57 kg/125.5 lbs., Jayson Ness at 61 kg/134 lbs., Mario Mason at 65 kg/143 lbs. and Dylan Ness at 70 kg/154 lbs.
Gilman, a three-time NCAA All-American for Iowa and Junior World bronze medalist, won a relatively deep 57 kg field that featured four wrestlers who have earned NCAA All-American honors across the Division I and Division II levels.
In the 57 kg championship match, Gilman found himself down 6-0 early to two-time NCAA Div. II champion Daniel Deshazer. Gilman rallied with seven-straight points to end the match and take the victory, 7-6.
U.S. National Team member Jayson Ness rebounded from a tough U.S. Open outing to secure gold at 61 kg with a 14-3 technical fall victory over past NCAA All-American for Northern Iowa Joey Lazor. Ness finished in third place at the U.S. World Team Trials last year at 61 kg and was a NCAA champion and Hodge Trophy winner for Minnesota.
After finishing in eighth place at the U.S. Open last month, Mason proved his mettle with a clutch 11-8 victory over NCAA All-American for Missouri Jaydin Eierman at 65 kg. Tied 6-6 in the final minute of the championship match, Mason executed a four-point takedown to cement the win.
Four-time NCAA All-American for Minnesota Dylan Ness won a thriller over Santiago Martinez in the 70 kg finals. The match went back and forth into the second period before Ness struck with a fall as the match was tied, 8-8.
The Last Chance World Team Trials Qualifier will resume from the RCTC Regional Sports Center at 9 a.m. (CT) tomorrow with the 74 kg, 86 kg, 97 kg and 125 kg weight classes. The highest placing athlete in each weight class who has yet to qualify for the U.S. World Team Trials will earn the automatic berth.
