The 2017 U.S. Greco-Roman World Team has come together for the first time since the World Team Trials in Las Vegas to begin its training together in preparation for the 2017 World Championships in Paris, France in August.

They have travelled to National Greco-Roman Coach Matt Lindland’s hometown community of Portland, Ore., for a full week of training and team building.

“This is to get them physically prepared for the World Championships and to lay the foundation for success. We are doing strength and conditioning, with running and lifting. We are healing up, and creating that strong foundation to prepare for the World Championships,” said Lindland.

The team is staying on the lake property of a donor in the city of Eagle Creek, the town where Lindland lived and raised his family prior to taking the USA Wrestling National Coach position. In addition, the team will be utilizing the training facility at Team Quest in southeast Portland, the martial arts and fitness gym which Lindland founded, and where he trained and coached during his MMA career.

There is more to this training cycle than just the workouts, however.

“This is some good team time. We have already done some shooting and some stand-up paddleboard. Today, we will go to the Upper Clackamas River for some whitewater rafting,” said Lindland.

Worked into the schedule is a media day on Friday, where the local media will be invited out to Team Quest to cover a workout and interview the U.S. Greco-Roman World Team.

In addition, there is a special World Team Seminar at Team Quest on Saturday, where the 2017 Greco-Roman Team will teach wrestling to the local community. The address is: Team Quest Mixed Martial Arts, 18206 SE Stark, Portland, OR 97233, Phone 503-661-4134.

There will be a morning youth session from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., followed by a World Team meet and greet from 11:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. In the afternoon, there will be two sessions for high school wrestlers and adults, from noon-2:00 p.m. and from 3:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. All proceeds from the clinic fees will go directly to USA Wrestling.

“This is my hometown and community. My coaches will be there, including my youth coach Marc Sprague, and some of my high school and college coaches. Everybody wants to meet our World Team, to spend time with them and to learn from them. This is our chance to give back to the wrestling community,” said Lindland.
