Semifinals set for Cadet and Junior Folkstyle Nationals
by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
Five returning champs remain on track to go back-to-back, advancing to their respective semifinals.
Cullan Schriever, the 2016 Cadet champion at 88 pounds, bumped up to 106 pounds, where he has seen similar success. The 2017 Iowa state champion opened the day with a fall in 1:39, followed by a major decision and technical fall in the next two rounds.
In the semis, he’ll face California’s Isaac Salas, who was the 2016 Schoolboy Folkstyle Nationals champion.
Another returning Cadet champ in the hunt for another folkstyle title is Pennsylvania’s Beau Bartlett, who won his 2016 crown at 126 pounds. Ranked as the top freshman in the nation by Intermat, Bartlett spent a combined 52 seconds on the mat in his first two bouts, pinning his first opponent in 18 seconds and his second opponent in 34 seconds. He sealed his spot in the 132-pound Cadet semis with a 14-3 major decision.
At 132 pounds, Paul Konrath of Indiana looks to take home another Junior Folkstyle Nationals title as he has dominated the bracket so far with two major decisions and a pin. He’ll see Dylan Droegemueller of Minnesota in tomorrow morning’s semifinals.
Alexander Lloyd heads to the 152-pound semis with a 7-4 win over Logan Meek, his closest match of the day. The rest of his tournament has been dominating, tallying a major, tech and fall before the quarterfinals. Next up for the Minnesotan is Isaac Wilcox of Utah.
Seven other 2016 finalists have made their way to the semifinals, including Cadet Daniel Kerkvliet (220) and Juniors Jonathan Prata (106), Kyle Biscoglia (113), Chris Deloza (132), Harlan Steffensmeier (152), Max Lyon (182) and Aaron Costello (285).
A pair of returning champs in Brock Hardy and Sebas Swiggum were knocked out of the championship bracket early. Hardy suffered an injury in the quarterfinals.
The semifinals are set to being Saturday morning at 8 a.m. CT at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The finals will start at 11 a.m. at the McLeod Center.
