There is still time for Jewish male wrestlers to sign up to compete in the Maccabiah USA Team Trials, as well as the new Maccabiah Junior Nationals, which will be held at the University of Pennsylvania on Sunday, April 2. This is a USA Wrestling sanctioned event.

Winners of the Senior-level Maccabiah USA Team Trials will represent Team USA at the 20th World Maccabiah Games in Israel, July 4-18, 2017. Wrestlers will be part of the overall 1,100+ member Team USA at the 2017 World Maccabiah Games, which features 10,000 athletes, from 80 countries, participating in 43 sports.

All athletes must have a current USA Wrestling membership card to compete. Wrestlers vying for a spot on the USA World Maccabiah Games wrestling team will compete in one of the eight Senior weight classes and will have a one kilogram weight allowance. All entrants in the Maccabiah Games Trials must be at least 18 years old and be USA Wrestling members.

The U.S. Maccabiah Games wrestling team will be led by head coach Chris Feder of San Rafael, Calif. and assistant coach Robinson Prebish of Richmond, Va. Both are nationally-respected wrestling coaches who also competed at the Maccabiah Games as wrestling athletes.

“Competing in the World Maccabiah Games was extremely important for me as an athlete. It gave me an opportunity to compete internationally at a young age and experience an Olympic-like event. More importantly it got me in touch with my religion and helped to shape my faith,” said Prebish.

The event is organized by Maccabi USA Wrestling Co-Chairmen, David Pruzansky from Wayne, N.J. and Stuart Pruzansky from Clifton, N.J. The cost of the trials per person is $100.00 which will include a commemorative t-shirt.

The World Maccabiah Games is the third largest multi-sport in the world behind the Olympic Games and the Pan American Games. All athletes competing in the Maccabiah Trials and Junior Nationals must be Jewish.

For the first time, there will be a Maccabiah Junior National Championships. Athletes wrestling in the Junior Nationals will have to make flat weight and compete in one of the UWW Juniors weight classes. Combatants in the Junior Nationals must be enrolled in 9-12th grade.

"The Maccabiah Junior National Championships is an outstanding opportunity for young Jewish wrestlers to compete and help us develop the next generation of outstanding Jewish wrestlers,” said Prebish.

Both tournaments will be contested in freestyle, but those going on to Israel for the 20th World Maccabiah Games will compete in both Greco Roman and freestyle in Israel.

Both Seniors and Juniors are asked to apply for the tournament below.
