LEWISBURG, Pa. – Led by eight wrestlers scoring bonus points, Cornell took the early lead after the first session at the EIWA Championships on Friday. Cornell is seeking a record 11th straight EIWA title.

Cornell had 23 points after the first session, with Lehigh at 19.5 points. Tied in third were Princeton and Binghamton with 15 points.

Top challenger Lehigh took a big hit even before the action started. No. 1 seed Jordan Kutler did not make weight at 157, which makes it that much more difficult for Lehigh to challenge Cornell. In addition to hurting the Mountain Hawks here at the conference meet, it also eliminates this weight class for Lehigh at the NCAAs in two weeks.

Cornell scored first round bonus points with a pins by No. 4 seed Mark Grey (133), No. 4 Dylan Palacio (157), No. 1 Brandon Womack (165), No.1 Brian Realbuto (174) and No. 1 Gabe Dean, a technical fall from No. 7 Will Koll (141) and a major decision by No. 5 Ben Honis (197). Dean, a two-time NCAA champion, is seeking his fourth EIWA title.

The Big Red had four quick pins in less than a minute, adding to the momentum. Palacio nailed a 15 second pin over Casey Mitchell of Sacred Heart, Realbuto needed just 24 seconds to put away Ebed Jerrell of Drexel, Dean pinned Kevin Parker of Princeton in 36 seconds and Womack put away Matt Fisher of Sacred Heart in 44 seconds.

Cornell didn’t have a perfect round, with No. 4 seed Jonathan Furnas going down, when Columbia’s Danny Reed scored a last second takedown to beat him 4-3 at 149.

"It didn't go as well as we hoped. We had one little setback. But overall, I am pleased. I just wish Lehigh would stop getting so many pins," said Cornell Coach Rob Koll.

Cornell didn’t have a perfect round, with No. 4 seed Jonathan Furnas going down, when Columbia’s Danny Reed scored a last second takedown to beat him 4-3 at 149. In his first wrestle-back, Furnas won a major decision over Seth Hogue of Bucknell, 14-6, helping with his own bonus point victory.

The highest seed knocked off in the opening round was the No. 3 seed at 157, Victor Lopez of host Bucknell, who lost to Zach Davis of Navy, 6-3.

The Championship quarterfinals are scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time. The EIWA Championships are being broadcast live by Flowrestling.
