U.S. Greco-Roman team receives draws for Junior Pan American Championships in Peru

LIMA, Peru – Eight U.S. Greco-Roman athletes have weighed in and received draws for Friday’s competition the 2017 Junior Pan American Championships being held at the Villa Deportiva Nacional Videna in Lima, Peru.
All eight U.S. competitors come highly touted after each one placed in the top three of the UWW Junior Greco-Roman World Team Trials held in Last Vegas, Nev. in April.
Junior World Team Trials champion Dalton Young (Nine Mile Falls, Wash.) opens against two-time South American champion Agustin Destribats of Argentina at 60 kg/132 lbs. Destribats is an up-and comer in the Pan American region who placed sixth at the Senior Pan Ams last month in addition to winning the Cadet Pan Ams in 2014.
Princeton standout Leonard Merkin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) takes on last year’s Cadet Pan American silver medalist David Brooks Bodden of Honduras in the first round at 66 kg/145 lbs. Merkin finished in second place at the Junior World Team Trials.
Gabriel Townsell (Chicago, Ill.), a NCAA qualifier for Stanford, will begin his run at 55 kg/121 lbs. against Ecuador’s Ricardo Quinonez Rosado. Townsell was a runner up at the Junior World Team Trials and doubled up on USA Wrestling Junior Nationals All-America honors last summer.
SIU Edwardsville product Mason McDaniel (Kirkland, Wash.) is set to face Andre Ramos Pinto of Brazil in the first round at 74 kg/163 lbs. McDaniel wound up in third place at the Junior World Team Trials.
Stanford commit Haydn Maley (Roseburg, Ore.) is slated to wrestle Leo Santana Heredia of Dominican Republic at 96 kg/211 lbs. Maley was runner-up at the Junior World Team Trials and is a past Junior Nationals champion in Greco-Roman.
Three U.S. athletes will compete in five-man round-robin brackets tomorrow. Brandon Kaylor (Puyallup, Wash.) at 50 kg/110 lbs., Thomas Brackett (Eads, Tenn.) at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Anthony Cassioppi (Roscoe, Ill.) 120 kg/264 lbs. are all entered in round-robin brackets and will wrestle four matches each.
The Junior Pan American Championships will begin at 11 a.m. (ET) on Friday with the qualification rounds and repechage bouts. Medal matches will follow at approximately 6:30 p.m. (ET).
Every match from the tournament will be live streamed to U.S. residents on Trackwrestling.com. Complete brackets can also be found through Trackwrestling.
