World Team Trials by the numbers: An in-depth breakdown of the 2017 freestyle WTT qualifiers
by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
More than 80 wrestlers have qualified for this weekend’s 2017 Freestyle World Team Trials, set to be held at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Neb.
Among those qualified, there are three Olympic medals, seven Senior World medals from four athletes and 13 age-group World medals.
Two-time Olympian and four-time World Team member Jordan Burroughs (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids WC) is the most decorated athlete in the field with a 2012 Olympic gold, three other World Championships and a 2014 World bronze.
Joining him is 2016 Olympic champion and 2015 World champion Kyle Snyder (Woodbine, Md./Titan Mercury WC/Ohio RTC) and 2016 World champion Logan Stieber (Columbus, Ohio/ Titan Mercury WC/Ohio RTC). Snyder is the youngest American to win a World championship and Olympic championship in wrestling.
Bronze medals in the field come from 2016 Olympic bronze medalist J’den Cox (Columbia, Mo./Missouri Wrestling Foundation) and James Green (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids WC), who won bronze at the 2015 World Championships.
There are five World championships from the age-group level, including Cadet and Junior World champion Mark Hall (Apple Valley, Minn./Nittany Lion WC), Junior World champs Snyder and Dom Bradley (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) and Cadet World champ Zain Retherford (Benton, Pa./Nittany Lion WC).
The tournament also features 35 NCAA Division I national champions, holding 59 titles. Standing out with four NCAA championships each are Kyle Dake (Ithaca, N.Y./Titan Mercury WC) and Stieber, who became only the third and fourth wrestlers in NCAA Div. I history to accomplish the feat.
Additionally, there are five collegiate national champs, who did not compete at the Div. I level, representing nine titles. Leading the way is three-time DIII champion Nazar Kulchytskyy (Madison, Wisc./Titan Mercury WC).
Penn State leads the World Team Trials qualifiers by school with eight wrestlers, followed by Minnesota and Oklahoma State, which each entered seven. Overall, 39 colleges will be represented this weekend.
As far as conferences go, the Big Ten overwhelms the field with 38 qualifiers. Big 12 is No. 2 with 16.
The Nittany Lions also lead the field in RTC participants with eight. There are nearly 30 RTC embodied at the Trials.
Check out the complete breakdown below.
The 2017 Senior World Team Trials start at 10 a.m. CT on Saturday. All the action will be streamed live on Flowrestling.org.
